My First Character Death!
Hey everyone,
So, my first character (first character that I liked) just died doing a postal run from Gullykin. I'm a little downtrodden over the whole thing, I was really liking her and had plans for what I would like to do with her. I know it happens and it does suck that she is dead, but I'm going to press on with a new character. The problem I've been having is trying to find people to Role Play and develop a group, so that I am actually not scared to leave Baldur's Gate when doing anything, haha. I'm not really sure where the lower level characters are or if there are any groups hanging around the servers, if anybody has any ideas I'd like to hear them out, before I make a new character. Generally this means I'm not really bound to a single server anymore, so if there are some ideas across other servers, let me know!
Thanks,
AusGre

Re: My First Character Death!
The standard ALFA welcome is "Good luck on your second character!"
There is often an steep learning curve. Some people choose to save concept PCs for after they've become comfortable with the interface and the servers.
Believe me, we feel your pain about lack of people to play with. If you're not on during peak hours it can be a real challenge.
One of the old adages is "The #1 cause of death in ALFA is boredom." Soloing will increase your likelihood of death, even if the activity is relatively mundane like mail delivery.
Send tells in game to others when you log in. Some will want to meet up.
Anyway... don't get discouraged! Get right back in there!
Good luck with your third PC!

Re: My First Character Death!
Those are questions I don't have quick answers to.
All I can say is that it sometimes takes time.
I guess don't be afraid to ask, even OOCly, A DM/older players, which roads are rumored to be safe and which are dangerous.
Doesn't mean the safe roads will -always- be safe, DMs can change that, and you should always be careful. However it does help a lot in expanding the life expectancy of your noobs.

Check in with IRC chat. There is a link on the left hand side of the web page. People in chat can help guide you to the right server with the most players you can connect with for RP.
Sorry you have not run into anyone so far. I suggest if you see someone on your server to message them and ask if you can meet up. It is not unheard of to use OC knowledge to meet up for RP as that is the reason most of us play.

Re: My First Character Death!
Low level's are hard in ALFA. I have killed off plenty of my level 1 & 2 PCs (I even kill them off at level 4). The best way to survive (without a DM) is to partner with other players. On that note, I recommend two things...
1) ALWAYS, tell people on the server that you are a lowbie looking for love. All of us have been there, most of us (if IC) will help in some manner. Don't be bashful. I had the pleasure of RPing with your last toon because you tagged me IG. Hopefully, I will again with your next toon.
2) POST, put a general post out and say, "Hey, I am starting a PC, I play these hours. Anyone want to partner up? Create a brother/sister? Any established PC want to play a long lost father/mother/RICH uncle? Any DM looking to run around a low levels? On that note... send a PM to epetrow (shameless plug for his ship, he needs crew).
Good luck.

Re: My First Character Death!
BG currently doesn't have many low level PCs; I'd recommend TSM or WHL, possibly MS. WHL has a lowbie campaign style session every week during euro hours if you're looking for non peek hours, and TSM will soon have a good group of lowbies running about. Not sure what things are like on MS.
Hint: if you're into bard types you might want to roll one on TSM sometime soon.

Re: My First Character Death!
Hello Everyone,
Thank you all for the words of comfort and sound advice in surviving on your servers, also your personal messages helping me. I shall take into consideration all that you said and invest that into my next character idea, whatever that may be! I actually have been trying to make a lot of acquaintances always passing a friendly hello to people on other servers or my own and trying to arrange some stuff. The character was just exceptionally weak starting class (Rogue), so it was no surprise that she was ambushed, by a wolf no less! As for finding groups, I do work a lot of nights and that does mean I can miss a fair share of stuff. However, I'm still going to try and don't think I got discouraged by the hard curve (I love the permadeath, so much better than forget-your-death servers!) and I will survive... One day, haha!
Very grateful,
AusGre

Re: My First Character Death!
My first ALFA PC (also a rogue) lived for about 40 minutes.
He tried to hunt a wolf outside of Shadowdale (on his way to the Embergreen's of course) and was killed in one strike.
Amanyar Atanatari we hardly knew ye. *sniffs sadly*
___
My second PC, Amelor Nermanilil, made it to level 4 then was killed by Illialid in a DMd event thattoook out 4 PCs. Only Nick and Rusty survived.
___
So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up.....

We still have Ronan around at least.

Re: My First Character Death!
We were heading in to a cave somewhere outside of Red Larch (on the Old TLR). Nick had Soppi, Rusty had some tank fighter. Both were at least a few levels higher than the rest of us.Ithildur wrote:The good old days, when ALFA DMed sessions were actually dangerous.dergon darkhelm wrote: ... in a DMd event thattoook out 4 PCs. We started fighting earth elementals and we lowbies were all hanging back throwing axes or shooting crossbows to no effect.
Illi emotes " *suddenly the huge form erupts from the wall* " and spawns an elemental right on us. Me and Arkan Bladesinger are killed inside of 2 rounds. Mayhem's guy held on a little while longer. Can't remember who was playing the 4th PC.

Re: My First Character Death!
Members of the tech team seem to have an unusually high rate of survival. Pretty sure that all three of us still have our first ALFA2 toons (though now I'm starting to doubt if Aislinn was Foam's first or second character). And my ALFA1 toons dropped off like flies until I learned to code.
Clearly the solution is to join tech.
or to acquire detailed knowledge of the game engine and then roll a character who gets along with and can be protected by bigger and tougher people, leveraging both to survive... and then be a big tough person to do the protecting later. That's also a pattern. I guess.

First character. Second was some orc that died on WHL, then a cleric that I retired, then a(nother) Selunite. Aislinn's my first character, and the only one that I've really played for a significant amount of time.Zelknolf wrote:Members of the tech team seem to have an unusually high rate of survival. Re: My First Character Death!
I haven't lost a PC yet in NWN2. I retired Rathalan Whitsword after 2.5 years to roll up Hully. They've both been fun.
Since we moved to allow alts I've retired a few .. .but no deaths yet.
