The tripping chart.
Ok, I was recently talking to Foam on the irc, and we were talking about characters who take drugs and trip, and I had mentioned someone along the lines of when that happens, I don't ever decide what happens to my character, I throw the dice. He then asked me to make a dice rolling chart, and said if I did he would use it. So I made it, then I thought, well, why not make it available to others.
I am not sure exactly where this belongs, it is for IC related things, but it is not exactly some alfa law, although I hope if people like it it may become a guide line for some IC actions. Regardless, if you feel this should be moved some where else feel more then free.
I tried to run the gambit from good things to bad things to weird things as much as I could.
1-5 Paranoia. You believe that there are people in the room trying to in some way hurt you. You can still tell friends from foes, but you may start casting offensive spells or taking offensive actions against what others see as open air, and you see as some form of danger. ((Note, I added you can still tell friends from foams, so this will never be a cvc situation.))
6-10 Defensive. You believe what the people around you are saying are doing is designed to mess with you or piss you off. Not hurt you (as in rolls 1-5) but, the simple comment or gesture made by a random person may leave you feeling deeply upset or hurt as if it was a personal slight. React accordingly.
11-15 Bored. While you are tripping, you are lost in your own little world, and everything there is more exciting. When you are pulled back to this world by a person or event, unless it is life threatening or changing, you have trouble focusing on and being interested in it. React accordingly.
16-20 Hyper. While you are tripping, your mind races, and you come up with all these ideas you want to do. And you want to do all of them at once before you forget. This can be anything from writing on paper, to mixing potions, to picking flowers to deadly experiments. What ever is IC for you char to do, she wants to do all of it at once. React accordingly. ((Note, this does not exactly mean she is running around at 30 mph like she is on speed if you do not want that to be the case, though it certainly can. What is does mean is that her mind will be running at 50 mph.
21-25 Calm. While you are tripping, you are suddenly washed over to a sense of calm. The world sees more peaceful, and the little things do not seem to bother you anymore. You want to indulce in calming activities, such as listening to music, or reading a book, or even just sitting in the grass and watching the clouds. Everything is calm, everything is nice. React accordingly. ((Note, this of course does not mean you will sit there with a doopy grin while the orc with the raised club comes charging at you from the bushes.))
26-30 Cuddly. While you are tripping, you just want to be close to other people, cuddling them and holding them. Or wrapped up in something warm or fuzzy. Perhaps even out in the sun snuggling a favorite pet if there is no one else around. When in this mood, you just feel you have to be close to people or things that will make you feel good. React accordingly.
31-35 Loner. While you are tripping, you just want to be alone. There is no anger of fear here twords others. But if trapped in their presence, you brain keeps thinking of ways to try to get you out, until you can go sit and relax in a place that is all your own with no one to bother you. React accordingly.
36-40 Indulgence. While you are tripping, you just want to indulge in all of your favorite things, be it sweets, foods, animals, painting, what ever it is you like to do, you want to throw yourself into it and do it fully. ((Note, this may not be like Hyper, you may not go from one thing to the next just to indulge in them, in fact, you may spend hours and hours just focused on one thing.))
41-45 Amused. While you are tripping, everything seems funny to you. This may be one of the best feelings of your life, because even the littlest things can make you laugh or smile. You may not be cruel about it, you may not laugh if someone falls down a flight of stairs, but you may burst out giggling if someone drops a cake that splatters on the ground. That is up to the personality of the one amused. But regardless, except for extreme cases, everything now is just a good time. React accordingly.
46-50 Apathetic. While you are tripping, you just don't care about anything. It is not that you only care about the good thing, or the bad, or being around people, or being alone. You don't care about the black or the while. You can look at something and find no reason to care about what it is or what is going on, even though you may realize the situation is important. (( Note, again, of course this does not mean you wont care about the troll coming at you with the club. How ever, you may not seem to care about the sickness of a person, or the birth of a new baby.
51-55 Rider. While you are tripping, you are enjoying your high, and you want to ride it out as long as you can. This can be dangerous, as it may lead you to the little more lie. "Just a little more, and then I will quit" It may lead you to taking more then you normally would, so your high wont end. ((Note, if you land on rider, react accordingly, and ride. However, after a another does, and a short period of time, roll again to break out of rider, and into another trip. If you manage to roll rider twice, this could be a problem, and you should react accordingly as stated in the beginning of the notes))
56-60 Compulsive. While tripping you feel compelled to do something, or many things. You get a form of OCD that may only present itself in this trip. Weather it is touching every door nob you pass, righting wine bottles in a shelf so they are all facing the same way, making sure ever wax candle is the exact same height. What ever it is, and it can be anything from a few things at a time to simply one, when you are in this state, you feel compelled to do it, and make sure no one else messes it up. ((Note, the OCD may not be the same every time. It may be thing A this time, thing B next time, and thing R after that. Or, it could be things A, B and R all at once. There are a lot of OCD's, pick some interesting ones, and in this case, it doesn't really matter if they fit with your character))
61-65 Talker. While tripping, you will not shut up. You think you have something important to say, or just something that other people should hear, and you are determined to make sure they hear it. Weather it is the same story you told 100 times, or just what you had for breakfast this morning, or maybe maybe a bunch of small things all rolled into one. What ever it is, you need to tell this amazing story to everyone who crosses your path.
66-70 Saboteur/Joker. While tripping, you feel you need to sabotage things, or set things up in a way so they go wrong, where the outcome will be funny. This can be anything from rearranging everything in the kitchens while the cook is out, to watch his reaction when he gets back. To putting sugar in a salt shaker, or serving vinegar as clear or red wine. What you are doing may not be truly malicious, meant to actually hurt anyone. But it sure will mess with them.
71-75 Forgetful. While tripping, you can't seem to remember things. Perhaps not the big things like your name or what building you are in, but things perhaps like why you walked into this room, why you are in this building at all, why are you talking to this person, or, what did that person just say to you 20 seconds ago. It is not impossible to remember new things while this is in effect, it is just harder.
76-80 Hyper Attentive. While tripping, you seem to notice everything around you. This may not function like OCD, you may not care about the wine bottles that are turned sideways, or the books that are misplaced, but, you are sure going to notice. All the small things you never cared to look at before will come to attention, the small cracks in the floor, that slightly crooked painting, ect....
81-85 Vengeful. While tripping, you remember the past bad things that have happened in your life, the insults, the slights, being ignored, what ever it is, you remember them, and you want that person to pay. It consumes your thoughts, and at points you wonder if you can truly be calm again until you get justice for the insult. ((Note 1, This is not like defensive, you may not get insulted by new things, but may instead get very angry or upset about things that happened in your past, weather that is a week past, or a year past, it does not matter)) ((Note 2, how this is handled depends on the character, if they can, or choose to do anything at all, it can be anything from finally walking up to a person and telling them up, to slapping them, to beating them up, to in some extreme cases killing them. But, this should not make you act completely OOC, if you are LG, consider a verbal beat down if you are CE consider well....what ever the hell you want really. My point is, not all revenge ends in bloodshed.
86-90 Spiritual. Weather you hold faith in a higher power of the gods, the power of mother nature, the power of karma, or what ever you believe in, when you are tripping, you feel very connected to this thought. And you want to do actions that will make you feel even more connected. This can of course mean very different things. Spending hours in prayer, planting seeds for future trees and plants, healing the sick or wounded, committing theft or murder or other such acts if you hold to a god of such. What ever it is that you think happens after you die, what ever high power you think there may be, you want to connect with it, and you will do what it takes. React accordingly.
91-95 Destructive. For what ever reason, when you are tripping, a sort of hate or anger fills you, and the only thing that can make you feel better, is the destruction of things around you. Even the most peaceful person can fall to this. Destruction can count from anything to tearing apart books and papers, to breaking glasses and plates and bottles, to ripping up crops, or anything else in that field. It may not necessarily mean you want to put a whole village to the torch, but you have to get up and do something. React accordingly.
96-100 Clarity. While tripping, for what ever reason, something opens in your mind, and you are finally able to thing clearly about things you may not have before. Perhaps things that were clouded by anger or pain or loyalty or other such things. But when in this state, all of that seems to fade away, and you are able to see things as they are, not as jaded as you believe them to be.
I am not sure exactly where this belongs, it is for IC related things, but it is not exactly some alfa law, although I hope if people like it it may become a guide line for some IC actions. Regardless, if you feel this should be moved some where else feel more then free.

All "maturity" RP, etc, taken into account, I for one, think making such "lightness" on this subject just seems a bit..too much. If you have a few "supposedly" mature players having a grand ol'time of being wacked through PCs on ALFA, then hey, i'll be the first to roll a blunt and chill
...but again, making "semi-official charts"? to "Rule-i-fy" what happens when so wired that you do not keep "full" control of your PC sort of, i dunno. *shrugs*

Re: The tripping chart.
Part of the point of drugs is that you don't have full control. Taking drugs IC but then saying it has no other effect always but a pleasing little happy high is stupid. Obviously, not all of these, will apply to all drugs, a blunt of weed might not make you trip, but if you are specifically taking drugs that do IC. You never know what effect you are going to get.Galadorn wrote:All "maturity" RP, etc, taken into account, I for one, think making such "lightness" on this subject just seems a bit..too much. We also have people making lightness of a LOT in alfa. But i am not trying to make light of anything, i am trying to help make something alfa players all ready do have a bit more realism if they want it.

Compared to how easily we pass off, say, murder and other such violent acts?Galadorn wrote:All "maturity" RP, etc, taken into account, I for one, think making such "lightness" on this subject just seems a bit..too much. + 0.75 (Not a pure +1 since Swift's point about the way murder etc. is taken with a ho-hum is spot on. In the equation of "Don't do X, murder and drugs are hardly comparable, IMHO.)Galadorn wrote:All "maturity" RP, etc, taken into account, I for one, think making such "lightness" on this subject just seems a bit..too much. Caveat: as long as it is completely voluntary on the part of the player whether to roll I have no problem with rolling on the chart. Depending on my mood when I am playing, I may say to the DM "sure, roll up a random effect" or I could say "nope, I'll RP some sort of effect myself." Hey, I went to college, I have some sort of idea how to RP the effect without being told.
Feedback: from a purely technical point of view, your chart is too random. Different drugs have different effects. Some are more powerful than others. Sometimes they have no effect on a person at all, or the effect is pretty minor (thought the more powerful drugs would always have an impact).
Feedback caveat: but it is obvious that a great deal of thought went into your chart, MI, and unless you made one for each type of drug, you could hardly have done any better. Frankly, what I may do is roll myself using your chart and re-roll if I don't like the RP that would result from the first roll. That is if my PC ever did drugs. Not his style.
Conclusion: I like the chart as long as use is totally voluntary.

Re: The tripping chart.
Well... realistically, not all drugs are made equal. The chart could apply to a specific drug of known effect- I wouldn't use it as a generic 'all drugs' situation.
If a chart is being rolled for drug use and you really don't have control... a roll of 1 should kill you in d20 seconds (first one) d20 minutes( second one) d20 Hours (third one) unless you get healed. (Drugs are bad)
while a roll of 100 should have a very unusual effect (something the DM could leave to their very twisted imaginings)
Then there's the whole addiction quality... each effect on the chart should last for a certain length of time, from hours to potentially their whole life... (unless healed)
I suppose I would just leave it to rule of fun, personally. Do what makes the player feel happy, if they are happy with a random effect. I do agree that at least the chart allows for some degree of unbiased effect, but I think it's being just a little 'too nice' considering what drugs could do realistically. I don't buy that drugs are harmless... and will not entertain that notion.
Though I guess it depends how realistic you want to be about it. Personally, I think the chart works well for alcohol... if one drinks too much.

Re: The tripping chart.
Hey MI, thanks for the chart! Will totally use it next time Emily goes seeking extra visions.
Great for certain kinds of drugs, not sure which ones Faerun even has, that are similar to weed and the like. Obviously if she ever got stupid and took harder stuff it'd be different.
This chart was made for my epileptic Oracle of the Moon diviner/cleric. Obviously she isn't a hard core drug addict, but it was perfectly normal for oracles and the like to use 'aids' in their search for wisdom. This chart would be a great, randomized way to handle her personality changes while on such quests, for the types of drugs that they would use. If someone is playing an addict, or is using harder substances, they probably want something more tailored to the drugs themselves.
But works perfectly for me. So, thanks!

Re: The tripping chart.
Ok I am going to clear up a few things here.
1.) I never made the chart thinking any dm would use it, that is not what i meant when i said i hoped the people of alfa might use it as a guild line. If both a DM and a player want to use it, then sure, why not, but it was more meant for a player in an rp situation. Sitting in a tavern with some friends and do some drugs? Bam, chart.
2.) This chart was not made specifically for foam. Maybe it started that way, but i had to much fun with it and made it general.
3.) Yes the chart does not work for every drug. But even smoking weed can leave you with anything from calm, to cuddly, to paranoia ect..... I tried to put a little in there for everything. Yes, you may have to re-roll if you get something that does not work well for your drug, however, it is meant to be a general chart.
4.) Yes, the chart may be to nice, but while i made this for general use, I also made it for ALFA. I could hardly include things that may involve CvC, or cause you to act out in a way that might harm you. In real life, a person may realize you are high and only punch you once or twice for getting in their face. But NPC's pull no punches, and to add anything that could be used ONLY with a DM i thought was a waste of space because as I said, I did not make this for any DM.
5.) Yes, drugs can kill you, that's great, but how many people are really going to kill their pc's just because they rolled it on my chart and there was not a healer around where ever they were, that is just stupid, and again I thought it was a waste of space, although, depending on how it is RPed, rolling rider 2 or 3 times could result in death.
6.) This chart was supposed to be for fun. If you don't like it, don't use it, I am not pushing it down anyone's throats or trying to make it a ALFA rule. But don't feel the need to mount your high horse and condemn it. Drugs are bad, yes, whatever. Drugs are serious, again, yes, whatever. But this is a GAME and some people choose to have characters that to drugs. This chart was meant to help with the fun and immersion and randomness drugs have.

That's going to be largely dependent on the chemical, environment, and PC in question. Unless it's somehow important to a plot, I'd not spend a lot of time on it. The chart above seems fine if a group is going to (consensually or no) experiment.

1) That's cool. It's well written.MaskedIllusion wrote:Ok I am going to clear up a few things here.

2) That's cool too.
3) That's probably my only issue with it really, and is my own humble opinion. It doesn't take away the good work you did on it.
4/5) I could say the same with adventuring. ALFA is a permadeath setting. Drugs can kill. If you don't want to take the risk of death, don't do drugs. (Moot point, I know nobody would ever RP a real medical emergency like that... that would be silly.)
6) I didn't think you were, I was only trying to offer constructive criticism and how it might be improved.
Re: The tripping chart.
Just thinking about wether or not it's 100% not an issue to make such a thing open and fun/highly-acceptable to ALFA playerbase when very young people do/might play here. Just thought something like "tripping out on hard drugs" could remain an "unwritten" effect, hopefully based on indepedent RP, and hopefully another sort of "consent" could be agreed upon between players...is all so as not to glorify drug use or at worst even joke too much about it.
No worries! It is a detailed and useful chart if someone wants to use some kind of randomly generated effect and then try to fold his/her IC behavior based upon that roll if his/her PC is "tripping". *shrugs*

Re: The tripping chart.
True, but that's an extreme very majorly and commonly passed over due to it's extreme. Drugs are not entirely lifethreatening but are also generally not the most positive thing to glorify/make-light-of publicly since the lighter the ideal get, the more closer to accepted by the kiddies they get. Just meant I think it could remain up to the RP of consenting players hopefully, but by placing a nice big detailed chart about "what happens to you when tripping out", while we all as mature players might chortle and add and delete based upon our numerous experiences in real life with such, younger players might just pass it off again as the "norm"?Swift wrote:Compared to how easily we pass off, say, murder and other such violent acts?Galadorn wrote:All "maturity" RP, etc, taken into account, I for one, think making such "lightness" on this subject just seems a bit..too much. If you have a few "supposedly" mature players having a grand ol'time of being wacked through PCs on ALFA, then hey, i'll be the first to roll a blunt and chill...but again, making "semi-official charts"? to "Rule-i-fy" what happens when so wired that you do not keep "full" control of your PC sort of, i dunno. *shrugs*
meh, forget it.

Re: The tripping chart.
You affirm that you are the age of majority when you play, and the ACR will harrass you about it if you try to avoid giving us a tidy explicit timestamp to that affirmation.
That's by design; our hosts are pretty vulnerable to all sorts of horrible legal business if we don't.
Unless you're worried about kids coming here to play and lying to us... in which case, they lied to us. And we don't have a reliable way to identify who to handle with the kiddie gloves, on account that it's the Internets and we have to take everyone's word that they can see fictional sex, drugs, and violence and not lose their minds.
