This, sadly, is not true-- as we've seen repeatedly in the past. Some people do want those logs, and will carefully archive them if allowed; some will, and some have, even talked openly about doing so.

The actual rationale to not have exhaustive logs of all text entered into game is more of a general concept of communication that would be presumed private, and that such a level of monitoring any given player shouldn't be done just because we can. We're pretty Orwellian as it is, I know, but we have to do something to protect privacy: the concept of allowing private communication is where we draw (and drew) that line.

We, thus, ask that players keep client logs, and that those be released on request. If there's suspicion of tampering, the PA can ask for assistance from tech in looking at those files. While the logs are, by default, plain text, doctoring them does leave some trails behind that we can look for.

Assuming fairness comes from people presenting their own evidence and lawyering their cases is troubling in it's own right: Those of us who are lawyer -minded and so trained/talented aren't inherently more right than the rest. By logging at the server level we could just let participants point to when it happened, give their own versions, and then let the "judges" observe the logs neutrally. Do we really want courtroom lawyering, including cherry-picking of logs, in between there?

So the needs of cyborers trump the need for all sides to be treated fairly by fully-informed by admins in a dispute situation? No-one is forced to read anything, except perhaps for the fringe case if cybor happens elsewhere at the same time as chat for a disputed case. Even then a filter to pick only lines from certain PCs should not be overtly hard to prevent brain bleach needs.

Anyways, guess this isn't exactly the topic of this thread, and I'm sorta derailing. But assuming the PA thinks logs in disputes are this important, the question of why not do it at server level does beg to be asked.

Edit:

Fair enough, but the grandiosity of going all Magna Carta on a gaming pastime aside, it's not like there's a shortage of private means of communication available on the web other than the nwn2 client.

My apologies.... was I asking for too much here?

I'll make do without, then. Again, will those INTERESTED in getting logging systems set up contact me. If you have DIVERGENT thought on the issue, feel free to post elsewhere. This is getting to be more than a bit rediculous. I'll look into the feasability of server logs for chat, as I do see the viableness of the system.

As Cloud graciously pointed out earlier, I have some experience helping those who want to use things like Chat logging or the Client Extension install and use these valuable add-ons. Feel free to PM me or grab me in Chat.

Myself, I use both the C.E. and the Gnomish Log Rotator (aka GLR5000) on a regular basis, and have chat logs of nearly all my NWN sessions, both as a player and as a DM, going back to 2006 or thereabouts. I find them most often useful to remind myself of the details of game sessions (now what was that elf's name, anyway?) and for writing up IC reports.

As for enabling serverside chat logging, I have pretty much the same misgivings as our Tech Admin.

Amazingly enough ( only amazing in that I think it will do any good at all to do this, since no one ever seems to pay attention to this post...no matter how many times I post this the majority of people will be herp and derp when it comes to logs) I am bumping this.
