SRD provides for LOTS AND LOTS of animal companion possibilities.

There's a boring list though that most people will probably pick from.

There are alternative lists where you can get some pretty neat critters, but with horrible level cuts to them. Twice as horrible if you're playing a ranger as compared to a druid.

Like, "hey I've got a druid 7, I'm going to kick my boring Dog to the curb and get a Dire Ape... but be effectively 6 levels lower for all AC purposes."

Humorously Dinosaurs are on the list, even for bog standard PnP / SRD stuff... no "feat" for it like in NWN2, rather, it's just remember to knock 6 levels off your effective level for calling the AC.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/range ... lCompanion (for how Rangers get their "lower octane" ACs compared to druids, but can dip into the druid alternate AC list at "even lower octane" type levels)

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid ... lCompanion (basic druid rules, mentioning "hey after 4th, go check out the alt AC rules if you want to pay the piper)

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid ... Companions (alt AC rules)

Not meaning for it to be a rulesy-discussion, rather saying "there's 15 basic ones and almost 50 weird ones in even generic non-splatbook PnP... NWN2 worlds can do better than the initial collection if really desired."

Now unleash the giant squids.
ALFA NWN2 PCs: Rhaggot of the Bruised-Eye, and Bamshogbo
ALFA NWN1 PC: Jacobim Foxmantle
ALFA NWN1 Dead PC: Jon Shieldjack

It's when you decide to have Minsc be the party leader :D

"Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads; swords for EVERYONE!"

Great line.
