Occasionally guilty as charged (not being sarcastic)
Why I live by willy nilly! :gape:

In fact, that should be a prestige class; Willy Nilly. What are the requirements I wonder. Your turn. Go. :)

Continuing the hijack...

I think I'm already playing this Willy. I usually RP the acquisition of skills after actually getting the ranks (admittedly, only when I remember to), as I'm usually not even sure what I'll spend my skillpoints on in advance. Is this wrong?

Just to add to this ..the last language my Char learned was Celestial..it weas on his regional list..even so..I did mention in-game in front of a DM that I wanted to learn it and why..then a few days later when there was an actual problem at level up..it was fixed..I got the language no questions asked. There was another langauage I wanted to learn and had also mentioned studying before it became a part of an RP line....Alas the nature of ALFA decided the fate of said Char and he will never learn another language. That being said..as long as I keep notes and communicate with DM's..and RP what my char intends..I rarely have a problem aquiring Skills ect. That are IC for my char. It's one of those questions I am suprised to hear because I'm relatively new ..and so far the answer is always..did you RP it, and is it IC for your char.

I really don't think it's a big deal, hollyfant...it's just that the question was asked, and if one thinks about it objectively, it should be no surprise that some of us feel that an exotic language is not really the same thing as more commonly improved and acquired skills.

I sorted Lucifer's celestial language IG, and since it was in his background I didn't see it as an issue.

But if confronted with an exotic language and no RP or bio history for it, I would be inclined to ask for some RP.

It just makes sense to me that finding a ranger, druid, fighter, etc. trainer would be so easily done it doesn't justify expecting much RP support for training, while getting access to (and tutelage from) an extraplanar or speaker of some extremely rare language would.

It's just my opinion...for whatever that's worth (my mother thinks highly of my opinions :D [or, at least, ...she pretends to 8) ]).
I seek plunder....and succulent greens

Late to the discussion, but the Language system is meant to also include 2 other means of adding available languages to the level-up selection list:

1) Learning from books (possibly skill check-based, almost certainly involving a number of "successful" item uses over a number of separate logins/game days.

2) Learning from other PC speakers of the language via a "Teach Language" option, likely involving some rolls, and an incremental tracking of progress in learning the language.

3) Learning from NPCs similarly, for fees or otherwise, via similar means.

In all cases, the skill point(s) will need to be spent in Speak Languages to actually be able to speak the language learned. I may be able to work it so a purchased "rank" can be "saved" until training is complete.

The scripting background for this has been more or less worked out, but hasn't been high-priority enough to get into testing, then into the haks and mods. It's meant to help make the acquisition of exotic languages a more interesting process and foster RP for the times in between plot developments, etc. In the meantime, DMs can simulate this.

As an aside, how many "successful" training/studying/teaching sessions do people think is appropriate? I'd like to strike a balance between "too easy, uninteresting" and "needlessly tedious and aggravating"... maybe somewhere between 5 and 10?

I can split some of this off into an ACR forum discussion if people want to continue debating language learning independent of the initial question.
