An update on the XP thing: I get no XP for a wolf either. And 5 for a badger. Something's skewed here.

I think it may have something to do with which way the creatures are moving. Eg if they are running away from you, no xp, it they are attacking you then the xp appears to be normal.

You can't CvC without a DM present. Just block their path when they are running from a mob.
