My feelings exactly. (I've been waiting for SF 10 for months now).FanaticusIncendi wrote:I've got nwn2 installed on one machine. I don't like it for a plethora of reasons. I decided about a month ago to take on a big build project and in doing so thought to give nwn2 another shot. Figured if I could get addicted to building for it, there might be a chance. Forget it. The toolset is just too damn daunting and I'm not the only one who feels that way. I can put together a nice exterior in 20 minutes with nwn1. I have neither the time nor the desire to learn a whole new system when I am only now feeling proficient with the old, and there's just not enough incentive otherwise to make me want to bother. I'm building my new project with nwn1 tiles, some extremely amazing tiles that just got released and in fact incorporate A ton of nwn2 content and placeables. Look here to see one example of the tiles I speak of. They're damn near as nice as nwn2 and no steep learning curve..
Add to that the easier controls in game, the superior DM client, the ease of hosting, the ability to play over a dial up (I still have players on dial up)... really the only thing NWN2 has is the 3.5 ruleset (which is available for NWN1 through haks). I personally think the graphics in NWN1 are better overall, of course I don't have a rig that can run NWN2 at max settings like I do for NWN1, nor will I bother to get one anytime soon.
On topic, I don't see any reason why NWN1 and NWN2 couldn't operate within the same community under totally different rulesets. The rules are mostly about CvC balancing anyway, which itself is another topic (in other words, why bother?? ), but obviously NWN1 PC's cannot interact with NWN2 PC's, so what difference would it make if people had 3 of them with one at 15th level or whatever?
I think it's a total disconnect to say the two systems couldn't have different rules. It may be true that once people see that ALFA can thrive under different rules in NWN1 the NWN2 peeps start pushing for the same rules on that platform too, but that just means the rules are working well and should be considered. Think of NWN1 as a test drive for concepts that are still strange and dangerous sounding to the NWN2 crowd. If they fail, you get to say "I told you so." If they succeed, you may need to rethink your opinions.
I suspect it will take mitosis for these changes to happen for NWN1, just as a function of the incredible inertia and stubbornness that ALFA is famous for, even at this late and small stage. But I'll be happy to be proven wrong on that.
