Dead in the water

Post by Brother Humphrey »

My computer just commited hari-kiri tonight with no warning. It simply shut itself off and won't turn back on. CPU, chipset and screen card were not too hot, so I'm clueless. I'm taking the hunk of junk with me to work to see if I can fix it and get back up for tomorrow afternoon, but I can't make any promises.

NOW, I'M REALLY PISSED!

Since my nwn2 crashed me out during my lunch break i have not been able to see or log into the server. GS shows the server offline in my history. My router can't ping to it. I even reset to factory defaults and manually restored my previous connection settings, and still i get jack sh@t. It's not a problem with the computer, since i can ping WHL from this one and another one, but neither can ping to 99.227.79.7, with or without the port added, and the second computer has never had nwn2 installed or any other reason for it to have been in contact with that IP before.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

  • the IP(-block) or the port somehow got blacklisted by:
    • your ISP
    • your firewall
    • a politician up for re-election
    • some rabid rabbi
  • your hosts file got hosed
  • someone ploughed an anchor through a cable again
  • you are really dead, but didn't know it
  • you aren't using $499.- cables
  • your anti-virus/spyware programs are being overzealous
Another possibility is that it is you who's getting blocked. Perhaps your ISP has been relaying spam, or your neighbour runs "cp" torrents or attacks the NSA?

Don't ask me why, but this morning I managed to log in after blowing 7 hours on the problem last night. No changes were made on my computer in the intervening 6 hours, no resets/changes of hardward/software/firmware, nada, it just let me in, no questions asked.

Now, as to your suggested reasons... the most likely is either the rabid rabbi, or something screwed up on the server's end. Was the server reset in the past 12 hours?
BTW, my neighbors can't even spell NSA, let alone hack into it. And wtf's a "cp" torrent? I'm to hot and pissed off to bother googling it.

I find that in these cases sacrificing a kitten helps.

we got a bunch in our building's store-room. can't be more than 2 or 3 weeks old (just starting to open eyes). I can tie one to each tire and use the last for a hood ornament, then let my wife drive

Oh, how sweet would this be? Assuming (like any good junkie) that the server is there when I get home, can any of you DMs give me an idea when I can hope to find you available (plz use GMT references. I'm 10 hours ahead of PDT, but don't want to do the math beyond a 3 hour calculation :P )
