My two all-time favorite rp'ers were people that would be easy to overlook at first. They both had theater training, one in opera, and they were both about my age. They were essentially background character actors, responding perfectly to their environment and playing off the rp of others with very well thought out PC's that had rich lives and complex personalities, but who rarely if ever drove the plot or took the spotlight. Interestingly they both always played human PC's. Their IC responses were always exactly what they should have been, and rp'ing a scene with them would come out looking like it had been scripted it was so smooth. "Subtle but perfect" is how I would describe them, and perfection is a high standard. The more I played with them, the more I appreciated their rp, and the more I tried (unsuccessfully) to copy their style.
Yes! They're rare and treasured when encountered. Unfortunately, too often overshadowed by all the damn uber-adventurer super-hero wannabes. But I guess that's D&D for ya. I remember when DMing on Daggerford, there was a human rogue named Jerdis. I forget the GSID, but I'm certain he/she isn't around anymore. I love those toons; full of flaws, fears, and weaknesses full of depth and life. And yes, roleplay them stats!
"The God of the Qurʾan is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." -- Vaelahr

A good point. If your character consistently makes eloquent speeches when their CHA (or CHA skills) are low, if they have regular flashes of insight or self control when their WIS is low, or they display commendable amounts of knowledge when their INT is low... well, no matter how pretty your words, you are not roleplaying very well...

I've seen some truly pointless threads in my time, and this strikes me as one of them. Noone will ever agree on what constitutes excellent rp, beyond stating that accurately portraying the role you have chosen is excellent rp. Naturally, there will then be disagreement on how to accurately portray any given role.

RPing in ALFA is writing a story cooperatively in the medium of NWN2.
If J.D. Salinger had a PC on ALFA, I'm going to guess it'd be a pretty exceptionally-roleplayed half-orc with a chip on its shoulder. However, if Oscar Auca had a PC... well... arm yourself with a breadstick and prepare to fight the giant hamburger monster heading your way....
The point is, it's just as subjective as anything creative... if you're talking rewards, imho you should try to keep out of giving extra RP awards based on quality unless it's truly amazing... because 'that's just like, your opinion, man.'
Currently laying the smackdown on Faerun as: Keryn Tel'Jora, who is XXX-TREME!!!.
Currently explaining the meaninglessness of it all as Vizian Nazyr.
Currently pointing out all other characters' shortcomings as Stephen the Archer.
The term 'excellent roleplay' is based on one's perception. There is really no definte answer since people's idea of 'good roleplay' will vary greatly.
