NWN2: The Big Crash

Post by dergon darkhelm »

So far NWN2 has been very prone to crashing for me. I get a windows error for an "unexptected error" and it shuts down entirely.

Most of the time I can simply relaunch NWN2 and jump right back in. But some of the time the crash is different....

I can relaunch NWN2 afterwards but most or all of the servers in gamespy list as offline, including ALFA. Trying to direct connect times out. So far the only thing I have been able to to correct this problem is completely powering down my DSL router. Even that, unfortunately is not guaranteed to work on thie first attempt.

Anyone have an idea for me for prevention or correction of this problem?

Thanks, dergon

When it decides to show that all the servers are offline, how is your connection outside the game? Can you still browse the net and join chat alright?

It sounds like a conflict of some sort, your router have an inbuilt firewall?

I have the exact same problem. Crashes are entirely random, can happen mid-sentence, though AT's seem to be the worst. About 1 crash in 4 I can't get back in because the TSM server is no longer listed, though other GS servers are and I can access the web. I typically hang out here for awhile, problem seems to fix itself in about 5-10 minutes. Of course by then my group has moved on.

I have a vague recollection that this is a known issue for NWN2. You may wish to check the official bioware/obsidian tech support sites for a fix. Sorry if I send you on a wild goose chase but I remember reading something about this a while back.

What make and model of Router do you guys have? I'd suggest checking for the latest firmware for any bug fixes. Also, what OS are you running? One test would be to connect directly to your broadband modem and see if it happens again so you can narrow it down to either the Router itself or the computer. The Router might think it's getting a packet flood attack and temporarily blocking access.

I've had similar things happen to me. Simply "refreshing" the server list fixes the problem. Does that work for you?

p.s. And if that doesn't work, try direct connecting to the server. If you can't connect, it could be your router or one in between you and the server, but I'll leave that to the network guru's.

You can get server IPs here: http://www.alandfaraway.org/serverstatus.php

I've got a Wireless G WRT54G running windows XP. I haven't tried direct connect, though since the server is listed by its IP in my history and is greyed out I'm not hopeful for that fix.

My wireless G is getting pretty old and I was thinking of upgrading anyway. Any suggestions on a new wireless router? Budget shouldn't be an issue within reason.
