In transition. Traditionally, my PnP group (which has been playing together in roughly the same incarnation since 1986, and we've played together before that as early as 82) was an "RP-what?" group. Meaning we are all about the big fights, leveling, hacking the monsters, making fun of each other, etc.
Then about a year ago, maybe more, I started them on Vampire: Requiem, and our group is morphing into real role-play. We get together at my dad's house (my dad is in the group) at 10 AM and we spend the next 2-3 hours making fun of each other, laughing, eating, laughing, drinking coffee, laughing, going through people's notes, and, um, laughing. Then by around 1 or 2 the game really starts. By 4ish, we are deep into the game and stay that way until about 2 in the morning when we break up.
Of course, in February, we rented a condo up in Lake Tahoe and spent 3 days and 2 nights up there gaming - so, we would have an hour or so of the laughter and silliness, then like 18 hours of the gaming. It was damn hard to keep with the boys that weekend as the storyteller.
The thing I thinked that helped the most was getting the boys into forum-role-play between sessions, during which they could have their own, long, in-depth conversations with various NPCs. This has really given each one of them some deep relationships in the game, and has drawn out the personalities of their characters. It has also shot a big old hole in the foot of their party cohesion (they are, *gasp*, starting to think and act like individuals out there).
Anyway, thats my group - I love 'em like brothers (except for my dad, of course, who I love like a ... well ..dad.)
What type of PnP player are you?

P.S. Just to make those of you who don't know already jealous, in Januray my PnP group took up a collection and bought me a Dell XPS 1530 laptop so I would have a laptop computer for gaming day. Love those boys!

My group has evolved alot over the years. Back in Jr. High & early Highschool we were pretty silly, not alot of RP, the DM basicly tried to kill the players at every given chance. It slowly changed and near the end to more of what I would consider a "typical" group with RP being encouraged during game sessions, though no real focus on the story. At this point it was alot of random modules with very few campaigns.
After Highschool, I ended up not playing for a while, until I hooked up with a new group in the mid 90's when I worked the night shift at my first real tech job. I'm still playing with this group, but alot of the people have moved on, and we've absorbed new players. Back then, when we first got together to play, we used to play 2nd edition, with a very heavy emphisis on roleplay and long story arc campaigns. There was very little "table talk" in the game, and people really tried hard to get into character, going so far as to dress the part with rennisance festival clothing.
Around the time 3.5 edition came out, we introduced some new players into our group, and some old players moved away due to work taking them to other states. Slowly, over time, the game has kind of degenerated into a table-top war game to the point where us "old players" from the 2nd edition days got sick of D&D and basicly chose to play another game. We play shadowrun now, and the RP & Storytelling is great! Unfortunately due to the problems we had with players rule-mongering and the excessive amount of new books packed full of rules, feats, spells, etc. we avoid D&D now at all costs.
I miss the old days of first and second edition D&D where the books were 75% lore, with about 25% rules. Seems quite the opposite now with WOTC at the helm. **sighs** 3rd edition really makes for a piss poor tabletop roleplaying game IMHO. Makes an awesome computer game though, with the computer doing all the rolling, no need to worry about the rules, just play.
