I've been using phpbb3 to administrate my pnp/fantasy grounds campaign and to keep in touch with my geek mates back home and I can tell you it works quite well..

Its seems really fast too..

As for the converter that Jayde brought up. There are good converters around. The problem Hialmar pointed out to me is that the database is way too large for Powweb to support. Basically they can't handle the stress on the databaseserver and it will time-out, causing a lot of errors and discomfort.

And the featurelist is quite impressive on another note, so as Veilan said, I think we benefit from it, eventhough some minor discomfort will go before it.

When you say the database is to large, would that be due to the number of forums/posts? Would it be easier to cull some of them off (like Rusty mentioned, off topics and GD takes up a lot of posts)?

Yeah it's mainly due to the numbers of posts. It's not that we have an extremely large forum, there are much bigger ones out there. The problem is that we have a fairly slow database-hoster. By converting the database it has to go through maybe more than a million lines and a single query might take longer than half an hour. This will result in time-outs and incomplete conversion.

So the plan is too keep the whole current forum archived for reference. We are planning to try to take the posts of the last 3 weeks or so as a start for the new forum, just to get it going.

It won't stop working but we will miss all the new features and the future modifications for the forum.

Therefore while it is not a very urgent change to do it will benefit us in the future.

As Roekemoes proposed to do the work for the conversion I've figured I'd first talk about this with everyone.

As to when we will migrate to the new forum.
In order to do that we (Roek mainly with my help) have to modify most of the specific modules we have developed for ALFA. This will take quite some time.

So we have no ETA at this moment.
When Roek is almost over we'll post a transition date.
