Zak, even the Bush whitehouse doesn't deny global warming anymore. Heck, even the oil industry is now saying it's due to human activity. The only thing left to debate is what to do about it, and "nothing" isn't on the table.

Yes, current global warming is due to human activity. By dumping extra CO2 into the atmosphere, and clearcutting lots of forests, we broke the equilibrium. The climate does warm and cool naturally over time, but we've accelerated the process by a factor of 1000, and we *still* have our foot on the accelerator. We have to change our ways or the planet won't remain habitable.

paazin, I was just kidding! I'll have you know I'm turning a new leaf and becoming more environmentally friendly!

Just yesterday I cut down two trees and planted a brand new tree in their place. I also threw away my yard equipment and after pouring out the gasoline in my yard, so the equipment wont go to the dump with harmful gasoline in it. Instead of relying on printed e-mail I'm now using real mail instead. Today, I'm going to burn some old logs that are just rotting on the ground with natural growth coming out of em. It'll be burning for a long time before those rotted logs are destroyed. I just realized, I should of saved that gasoline and recycle it for the bon-fire. Just goes to show you can't drop old habbits overnight and it may be a while before I am environmentally friendly and carbon neutral. What counts is that I'm working on it and I think I've made a lot of progress to that end.

You know seawater is radioactive, right? 99%+ of the world's available uranium supply is dissolved in the oceans.

Psst... your body's radioactive too. Don't tell anyone. I'd be a hell of a lot more concerned about the shit coming out of coal plants getting into the water. It's more radioactive than a nuclear plant, too.

Something tells me the fissionable materials used in the reactor is a bit more radioactive than coal and seawater, hence the need for centrifuges. If they could be made 100% terrorist and earthquake proof, I'd be all for them.

tl;dr version: typical coal power plants release about nine pounds of uranium and thorium per day, plus plenty of radon. Coal power plants are typically 1000 times more radioactive than a nuclear plant of the same electrical capacity.

Nothing is 100% safe. You have to decide what risk is most acceptable and go for that one. From my interest in all things nuclear and the research that's gone along with that, I find modern nuclear power to be, by far, the best option--until fusion, anyway.
