Zarrin Stood next to the inside of the wall surrounding White Chalk, uttering the last few words of his spell. For a moment there appeared a mouth on the stone, proof his spell had taken effect, and as expected the mouth melted unseen into the stone. The mouth would not be seen or heard from again unless the walls around the village were crossed, and in that case the mouth would scream for the guards to come and deal with whatever intruder had decided to enter the town without passing the inspection of her guards.

It was late in the day, Zarrin prefred to do most of his casting of the defensive magics before going in to rest for the night. He could hear the sounds of the first crickets waking up and begining their song. Crickets, they seemed to be a universal creature. He made a mental note to use the sound of their chirping in the future somehow. He liked the sound, and wanted to put it to use.

Walking down the wall 10 paces, he paused and began the same incantation again. He had been "gifted" with this spell, a scroll from the treasure trove of a preist of Kelemvor, a man called Machus. Zarrin knew that owing a local a favor was actually a good thing. Debts, more than friendships, were the things that boung a society together and if the locals were investing effort in him to make later gains then he was on the path he desired. The path towards profits.

Again another mouth appeared and then faded into the stonework. His master had loved this spell, there had seemed to be a magic mouth for every possible occasion back in masters palace. When Zarrin would simply be to close to his masters favorite books, a mouth would erupt from it and curse him with the liches rasping voice to warn him away.

In each case such as this, the "butlers" of the old lich would come scuttling in to watch with lifeless eyes, mindful that the boy might not heed a command from masters magic mouth. Calling them butlers was a kindness... Masters butlers were the animated corpses of toddlers, even some were the undead corpses of infants. More creepy than that was the fact that the crawling undead babies could make use of a wall or ceiling as a surface upon wich to crawl. The watching eyes of these perverted monsters could be anywhere. Master trusted no one living, a mortal spy could be bribed, but a wight child would always answer truthfully to master.

Zarrin was frowning a bit as he thought back on his master.

What would the old bastard think if he were here to see me... having mastered one of his overused spells, putting it to work guarding backwater people and the cows they live amongst

He had been frowning when he started the thought, but by the end of the compleated thought he was smiling at the notion. Master was outdated, while he grasped the importance of the enclave system... he would not in any probability understand having to generate goodwill in strangers before attempting to set up shop and peddle thayan wares to foreigners.

Finishing another incantation, he moved further down the wall and repeated the process. His cousin Aagati had been a bit jealous when he learned the spell, Zarrin couldnt blame him as it was a damned useful spell. But Aagati was an enchanter, and Zarrin was an illusionist. This spell was beyond his cousins sphere of control. These thoughts made Zarrins mind wander back to a much earlier time, when they were still children preparing to go off into the world of men.

**************************************************************************************************************************

The two boys sat on a beach, one of the few white sandy beachs on the northernmost island of Alaor, the oceanbound Tharch. They were eating a fish they had caught themselves, it was a special time and they both knew it. It would be the last time they saw one another as children. Each had passed their tests to be allowed to study wizardry, soon they would be adults and apprentices. The first to speak was Aagati.

"So zar.. you passed your tests for three diffrent schools? thats very impressive to have your choice of appointments."

"Yes, but didnt you also score high enough in two diffrent schools?"

"I did, enchantment and evocation. But i have little desire to be an evoker, more work and less reward... besides, evokers are generally sent to battle first."

Zarrin nodded to these true words. He had also been accepted by the evokers and also had no desire to become one. He was aiming at pleasing his mother by becoming a diviner. But then something Aagati said struck a cord in him.

"You know zar... wouldnt it be a great advantage for two wizards who knew they could trust one another to be in opposing camps? I mean.. the trading of secrets is common enough, but being apprentices we would hear many of our masters secrets..."

Zarrin raised a brow, he knew where this was going and he finished the thought for Aagati.

"Yes, and the apprentice who had secrets to offer his master, knowledge of what his political rivals were up to.. would be a valued apprentice indeed"

The two children smiled. Neither of them had any notion that the plan they were formulating now would end up getting them both exiled from their homeland. For now it seemed brilliant. Zarrin spoke again.

"Well, if we really want to do this right, we should enter into the art from opposed schools. I was really planning on being a diviner, it will please mother greatly"

"Thats true, but if you tell her that the Illusion school greatly desires you and you only had a lukewarm acceptance to the Diviners... she would see the logic in going where you are most suited, wouldnt she?"

Zarrin hadnt recieved a lukewarm acceptance to the school of divination... but he was sure he could convince his mother his passion was with Illusion. A magi should study his passion, and the school of Illusion was a great one. The Zulkir of Illusion was the right hand of the grand Zulkir, Szass Tamm. A young thayan could do a lot worse than getting into the illusion school. This was something that could, and should, be done.

The boys agreed then to write their letters of commitment to the schools of Illusion and Enchantment, respectively.

**************************************************************************************************************************

It had beem folly then, but Zarrin smiled about it now.

If I had become a diviner, I wouldnt be able to cast this wonderful magical mouth spell. Exiled or not, It was a good choice. More than a good choice, it was the right choice.

Finishing his last utterance of the spell, he took one last look at the purple and orange of the sky as he made his way toward the Dusty Road inn, and his waiting dinner.

Very nice :D
I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.~~Groucho Marx

"Dalina, of Gauros" Said the dusky skinned woman, just after he had introduced himself to her.

They had literally bumped into each other in the streets of Daggerfalls. Of all the places to meet another Thayan, Zarrin hadnt expected it to be the backwater dale of daggers.

They ended up relaxing and talking over drinks at the Teshford arms. She explained that she had been on one of the ships that bombarded Sembia just this last spring. She had been knocked overboard in the fighting and swam to shore. Being so far from home the young lady had become lost in her search for an enclave located anywhere but Sembia.

Zarrin could hear the hand of Beshaba in her woeful story. Surely his ill-eyed goddess had provided this one, down on her luck, to him as an opportunity for gain. He liked her as well. A common born mulani girl, she wore her hair appropriate to her rank in society and well mannered. Like most Thayans, she was well groomed and seemed a disciplined person, she HAD to be a disciplined person as she had served in the Thayan infantry.

As they spoke of the finer things left behind in their homeland, Zarrin caught himself looking at her and thinking on her virtues.

Such a beauty... a finely scupted body, black silky hair, a patriot, and ambitious. A perfect thayan, she is even faithful to our patron, Kossuth.... wait, you silly buffoon.. think on your advancement, no staring at girls till you wear the red. All things must wait untill you have made something of yourself.

He was snapped out of his reverie by her asking a question.

"So im short on coin to replace the gear ive lost.. I assume you know where I can make some money around this place?"

"Well lady... that thought leads me to an idea Id like to share." Replied Zarrin.

Dalina waited for him to go on with his proposal.

"Id like to recruit you as a guard for house Canos, I and my cousin live here and we would be very glad to have you working with us. We make a decent living here, but the eventual goal is to build an enclave and see the vast profits associated with such."

The girls black eyes glittered with a thirst for wealth and power that reminded him somehow of his masters hungry black-pits eyes.

Almost comical.. her eyes remind me of the eyes of a Lich I knew... and I find it attractive.

Zarrin continued to speak.

"Of corse im asking you to join on with a couple of apprentices.. but should I even get close to my goal, Ill be wearing the Red.... and if im wearing the red, you understand Id be able to make an appointment of a Thayan knight...."

Zarrin let his voice trail off, giving it just the impact he hoped. The lady found the notion of prestige and rank even more appealing that simple profits. Profit was valuable, but not so nice as being able to look down on those who had accomplished less than yourself. Such a decent Thayan. She answered him with that gleam of ambition showing.

"Now that, Zarrin of clan Canos, sounds like an excellent offer. I accept"

"Wonderful, in that case allow me to purchase you a shield to replace the one you lost, and some darts. After that we will hike up to the village we use as our base of operations. Its tiny and run down like everything else in the dale.. but the ale is cold and the people arent so frightened of us are they are in most other places in the dale"

The two packed up their things and headed out of the inn. Zarrin had a rare smile on his face, the Thayan population of Daggerdale had just increased by fifty percent.
