Mike - this has, and likely will continue to happen on a case-case basis. Setting up a player's *right* to do it would simply promote what should be a very rare occurance. Setting up a system to do it repeately essentially kills our 1 PC rule.

I have had a couple players approach me wanting to retire, but not wanting to jump into a new PC with both feet. I've told them the've got a week and I'll reverse it. So far, nobody's come back and asked ;)

Fionn, my understanding is that once your new pc logs into the server, your retired pc is history. there is no going back period. your one week option should not be allowed at all.

If they updated the Charter to remove Rule0, mea culpa.

Level 8 is elitist? Are you and i both on the same planet here?

Id wager a very good portion of ALFA is near, at or above that level. Now level 15, that would be elitist, but level 8 is a cinch so long as your careful.
Uh... yeah. I'd like to see a poll about the highest level people have achieved with a PC in ALFA. I've never hit 6th... but I've quit on countless PC's at level 3-4 due to boredom.

I'd bet over half of ALFA has never reached 8th level.

Firmly against this idea. Move on. Leave your happy memories where they belong. The only way I'm in favour of two PCs is one underdark and one surface - and even then I have my doubts.

Word.

What I hope for, is a one to one relationship between a physical entity holding the bic character file and the slot needed in the authorization system in order to play. The system should also delete the bic file, assuming that proper backups exists of it. A similar system has been proposed in the DM forum eons ago.

I've often thought that would be nice. With a choice of 1 character, I'm likely never going to choose the underdark over the surface, and there are clearly some players for whom the reverse is true.

Not reaching level 8 because you lose interest doesn't make it any less easy, it simply means you weren't interested enough in a single concept to reach the level.

My PC knows about 5 folks at level 8 or beyond.

I've lost count of the number I've seen die off at half that level.

To say "Reaching 8 is easy" seems inaccurate IME.

I think Fionn touches on something here, which is that there could be circumstances when returning a retired PC makes excellent RP. Let's say *hypothetically* a year after the war in WF the shadow of the Beast Lord falls again over Loudwater. No-one can stand against him. But there is one person who faced him down and lived to tell the tale - the paladin Sir Kit Gyrfalcon, now a recluse in a remote monastery in the distant Earthspur Mountains. If a group of players were desperate enough, with the approval of the HDM of their server and Dorn a quest could be arranged to journey to the Earthspurs and attempt to convince the Falcon to return to battle his old foe again. With all agreeing, Dorn's present character could be put "on ice" and the Falcon brought out of retirement for a specific campaign, after which he goes back whence he came and Dorn's new char takes up where he left off.

If only Kit weren't dead!

I guess what I'm saying is that RP and plot should > everything.

Welcome to ALFA. Good luck on your second character.

...

But seriously, do you ever think the rules lawyers would give ground over something as trivial as this? RP and plot > everything? Have you not heard of the dread PGers for which every rule added in the past 3 years has been catered to? We must think of them, lurking in every conceivable corner, waiting to follow ALFA's laws to the letter, while completely disregarding their spirit.

And in ALFA, as long as you adhere to the letter of the law, you are nigh untouchable so long as you do not brag about your exploits. Therefore our letters must be many and our adherance strict. So it is written. So shall it remain.

No heletari - I'd happily NPC Kit after such a quest (had he lived) but he's not coming 'out of retirement' just because I created some plot totally above the abilities of every PC currently playing the server.

My point was a friendly nudge towards a new PC when the plots surrounding the old had gotten icky. The PCs in question were essentially retired due to the actions of others, but the player didn't want to do it. After weeks of that crap, a fresh PC was the right answer. Presuming we were both wrong and he *still* wanted to deal with the original IC, I agreed I'd reverse it.

The last time I read that section of the Charter, it was at DM discretion, so I don't see this as even bending the rules. I would *not* wish to be told I had to by some player because we'd passed "yet more granular rules to tell me how to run my server" ;)

I believe you mean the APM Fionn. That is where you find it, not the charter.

I've had plenty of PC's I've been interested in. None of them made 6th either. Someone really needs to send me some pointers on powergaming... I'm really not doing it right.
