Zartruss Rook Takes Red Pawn

Post by jmecha »

The plan was a good one, and everyone ignored it. Advancing deeper into the Kryptgarden murdering the Zartruss they encountered on sight, moving along growing emboldened with their initial success. The band of them a disorganized gaggle of capable individuals, none of them working as a team, they were quickly overwhelmed when the Zartruss responded with superior numbers.

What came next was not a tactical retreat nor a strategic withdraw. They were routed and their disorganized numbers scattered and dashed in every direction like the pig iron casing of a Gnomish scatter bomb. It was a dangerous and deadly chaos, and the Zartruss moved into it unflinching and unrelenting in their determination to murder those who dared to trespass into their lands.

Pawn Xandos Klaxxan was one of the first to break contact and flee. All of his magical wardings had been stripped away and he had suffered grievous injuries from the potent evocations of the Zartruss Arcanists and bleed heavily from the blades of the Dragonclaws. As soon as he was a short distance from the frontline of the conflict he reached to rejuvenate his stone skin wardings with the marvelous device his trusted artificer Sixteen had made for him, and then set to drinking potent curative as quickly as he could slurp down the divinely empowered elixirs to see his rended flesh made whole again. It was only then he took a moment to try and evaluate the conditions of the battle space surrounding him.

There was no sign of the wizardess Keryn, Cali their near feral scout, the elf Aw'wen nor Wyk the shape changer. He saw only the Gnome Laird skirmishing against overwhelming numbers of on coming Zartruss and Gael Lynch who was struggling to escape a Zartruss Beserker chasing him with his axes raised high and his speed unrelenting dispite the giant glowing hand trying to halt his movement.

Moving between the trees like bullet released from a sling, Pawn Xandos Klaxxan ignored his remaining injuries and used the momentum of his charge to blindside the Beserker with all he had. The impact was enough to gain the savage's full attention, and Gael the opening he needed to make his escape. The exchange of violence that followed was nothing less then unchecked brutal efficiency from combatants.

Time dilated and a second Zartruss Beserker joined the fray before Klaxxan withdrew. The impact of the second Beserker's axe lifted Klaxxan from his feet and tossed him into the air where he briefly lost consciousness before hitting the dark dirt of the forest floor like a boneless rag doll, limp and lifeless.

The pain was overwhelming as he briefly regained his senses and staggered slowly and mechanically to his feet. The deafening roar of the Beserkers near him drowned out the sounds of battle permeating through the forest of twisted trees. Between the blood loss and injuries, Beserkers beside him appeared twin titans of terror and what senses the Pawn had regained were washed away in a flood of overwhelming fear.

His mind reeled and retreated in abject horror, as his body in one last futile act of self preservation began to stagger and stumble slowly away upon his battered and bloodied limbs. Pawn Xandos Klaxxan did not live long enough to suffer the pain of the final axe's impact as it crashed deep into his flesh and bone.
