Bae'ithra's Down (aka They Got the Stones)

Post by Ladellon »

Heard sung on the upper floor of the Bright Blade Brandished one quiet and peaceful evening . . .

From Great Oak set off seven strong
In search of stones in Silverwood.
Hear now their quest, relayed in song,
Of all the perils they withstood.

The druids of Old Father Tree
Together warned of fiery skies,
Unearthly howls of some banshee,
And beasts of an unheard of size.

Undaunted, seven geared themselves,
Their outcome doubtless understood,
To overcome, as men and elves,
The dangers of the Silverwood.

Through Mull Gate trod the company
And southward to the forest’s edge
Where they did pause and, on bent knee,
Entreated gods, their way to hedge.

Then plunging into night’s embrace,
No moon to light their chosen way,
Toward their goal they set apace
Were they hunters or were they prey?

Demonic wails shrilled overhead
As they approached a guarded bridge
That o’er the Rauvin’s waters led
And beyond to a soaring ridge.

While Knights of Silver, muttering oaths,
Called forth and company fell in,
Ten trolls broke through the forest growth,
And, charging, made a fearsome din.

Steel swords were drawn and arrows flew
As company and Knights closed ranks
The blows were swift and aims were true
And death was dealt on Rauvin’s banks.

The menace down, they forged ahead
Toward the ridge and distant light
Of flames that filled the night with dread.
All knew they faced a fiercer fight.

A gash within the earth was found,
Emitting noxious flame and fume
Small demons, at the coming sound,
Turned to defend and deal their doom.

They pressed attacks on every side
A score or more - a fiery threat.
As swords struck home and demons died
One cried out, “Ho, we’ll lick ‘em yet.”

A sudden roar, the fight not done,
The earth belched out a beast of flame
An elemental flicked its tongue
And sought their very lives to claim.

But swords and spells were brought to bear,
The battle raging did resound
When all was done, soon filled the air,
A cry, “Our Bae’ithra is down!”

While all did mourn his fated death
O’er hills a unicorn was spied.
Mielikki’s form caught all their breath
Would she return him to their side?

Within her grove they laid him down,
In reverent and respectful tones.
The company will be renowned,
For, through all that, they got the stones!
