Rising and falling like breath
Ebbing and flowing like life:
The powers of life and death
Words that cut like a knife
Gestures that seize upon the mind
Fog that permeates the brain
Creeping into every crevice it can find
And leaving behind its indelible stain.
Bound in a trinket, a band,
A masterful creation of a skilled hand
Inset with a gem, a precious stone
And imbued by one who desires a throne
In the hearts of those who espy her
And no one will deny her.

For centuries, for moments, idling away
Time spent cooling, putting down roots
Attachments made, blandishments exchanged
Mind growing keener and wasting away
Curiosity brimming, piqued, roiling--
The novelty had worn off, and it was time to see
New old things, and old new things
Brave the placid seas
Idling away hours and minutes and eternities
Waiting for new shores.

Foreign urges implanted in my breast
Vile impulses hardly expected in one of so fair a folk
These desires roil and churn in my heart
But should I heed them, it will not be at my own behest.

In fair Silverymoon safety lies,
Yet scant life to one so driven by wanderlust
And every day I stay within these fair walls, a little bit of me dies
Quietly, but assuredly--
But outside her fair walls a fouler shadow lies.
Matched, perhaps, by the shadow buried in me.

And with my weakening Me
Comes a waxing thee
Full of vice and iniquity
Eager to use my empty husk
From early dawn past late dusk
In twisted, darker reflection of past deeds
Where fell roots grow from far fairer seeds.

Hair that glittered silver-gold in the moonlight streamed like a cloak behind the woman as she walked, quickly mounting the low hillock. Emerald eyes that seemed to glow faintly in the darkness gazed at the heavens, at the full moon as it trailed its tears.

Softly, at first, her melodic voice--like wind and music, she had heard it described; she and all elves--rose in song til her voice filled the empty pasture about her.

O moon, trailing your tears over the sky
Blue hole piercing me with the question no one can deny
Why do you cry, O moon, with your tears trailing so high?
Is it for the night, so cold and dark?
Is it for the death of the song of the meadowlark?
Or perhaps you shed those tears for me
Knowing that I am blind, and cannot see?
But for your light in the dead of night
I would know nothing by sight
No merry eyes, no pouting lips, no passionate gaze
Instead, a black pernicious haze--
This, this only fills my eyes
When shadows or clouds your light me denies.

Her mellifluous voice echoing around her as she sang her last note, the elfwoman heaved a sigh and turned again toward glittering lights in the distance. The trip had not been enough. It only made her want more. But soon, soon she would be free to wander. At least for a time.

Preview of something I've been working on in lieu of sleeping. If you click the second image, the zoomed version has a fair amount of detail that gets lost in the thumbnail (I think, anyway).

That's actually more of a Paizo-era Dragon Magazine (and subsequent Pathfinder RPG--Wayne Reynolds is an amazing artist) ear style than a WoW ear style. WoW elves' ears are much more vertical--and are about twice as long (Blood Elf/High Elf ears extend vertically above the top of the head by several inches; Night Elf ears extend horizontal backwards at a diagonally upwards angle, reaching their tips above the top of the Night Elves' heads). One could also argue that the ears are anime elf ears, except that my ears don't extend horizonally from the side of my elves' heads (any more). :P

This is the Players Compendium Pic which I think is derivative of the Elfquest craze in early to mid 1980's:

Parted, I part ways
Mellowed, I linger
Those traipsing in misfiles
Lope grey true nor
Mint and earnt noltry players
Single cinders from farther weddings
Player hindered but not jackals,
Locks free captives goes friend.

(Meant to be sung to the tune of "The Beverly Hillbillies") :

There once was a gnome with fiery red hair
A firebrand without compare
Who wandered about setting words to deeds
And meeting common-folk's needs.

Her name is lost to time,
But to history she is known as Rooftop, in a circumstance most sublime
For her deeds were many, variegated and famed
And none more important than the occasion when her hatred was enflamed.

Now it happened like this, one heady day
In the land of Hope where paladins live and rule and die.
Rooftop had heard of a great plague, and resolved to right this wrong,
So she strapped on her heavy plates, wobbling under her armor's weight and set out toward the climax of this song.

Rooftop, she found her prey--a pack of wild dogs, diseased and decayed
And knowing her enemy was at hand, she hefted her oversized sword and wobbled forward toward her enemy's raid.
She clove and hewed and cackled with glee-
For she had not fallen over or cut off her own hands, you see!

Rooftop returned home, her deed done
And the people of Hope praised, for the day was won,
And bards all over sang her tale:
The tale of Rooftop the Doghater, who hacked up dogs on the trail.

(Atrocious, I know. My ghaele-as-a-character-class bard wrote this about a wife's character in a PnP game, unwisely taking advice about the song from an elf archer with a Charisma of 8. And my wife will kill me for knowing I posted this to the internet.)

Scary Mary trapped in a cage
Won't you spare us your rage?
How did such a fair catch
Find that she had found her match?

Snuck into town, she was just having a look around
When she was found and netted and caught!
"Who dares steal from our fierce tribe?" rumbled a dread sound
And a hag most foul appeared, her hideous features with danger fraught.

Quick words of spellcraft betrayed out fair maiden
And though overwrought, the wretched hag feared to end so fair a life;
So instead, poor Mary was set in a wrought-iron cage--
Scary Mary was left helpless to die of exposure or old age.

Scary Mage trapped in a cage
We'll release you from your oppression
And give our benevolence expression
If only you avert your rage!

(More drivel, but I wanted to post that one, from the same campaign. Presumably Ansha heard about them as tavern tales and badly-sung songs on her inveterate wanderings.)

She is the darkness
In my heart,
The cloud of unknowing
Born of lovers' lost art.

She is the darkness
Creeping through my veins
Touching my mind
And leaving behind such foul stains.

She is the darkness
Enveloping my soul
Whispering sweet lies
And threatening to swallow me whole.

She is the darkness
Clouding my eyes
The queen enthroned
Who seeks only my prolonged demise.

She is the darkness
Hovering behind my thoughts
Warping me, twisting me
Molding me as she desires.
She is the darkness
And I am she.

The air is stifling here
Thick with restriction
Crude and raw, but undeniable.
I am unwelcome here, the very air sings
And yet there are so many distractions
I would love to indulge.

The Wards thrum here
Choking off the Weave into predetermined rivulets
Streams and channels at the whim of an old human witch.
It is not pure, nor refined, but it is there
And it aches
Like cold iron manacles binding my mind.

I suffocate in this, her home
And long to be free.
When did I come to need a reason?
To travel, to talk, to see; for anything I do.
I need only be me
And yet I caged myself, in my desire to be free.

I am stronger now
Than ever I had been
And I'll not cower in this wretched gem
Any longer
I'll seize the Realms in all their splendor
I'll find a place where I can indulge my every whim.

Farewell, fair Silverymoon
Farewell, stifling Gem
Glad homeagain, freedom.
