Unsightly Tale

Post by danielmn »

The fast breeze from the river whipped the long dark hair to and fro, switching directions rapidly.

Perhaps I have been here too long.

He swayed with the breeze, letting it move him from side to side. He grinned, memories of his youth coming back...sitting on the lower branches of the old oak during storms, letting the wind tilt his body about.

For a moment Saleem flickered in his mind, deep blue eyes staring back at him. A hazy vision of him running through fields, fur rolling and tongue lolling. As Saleem haulted in front of him, the voice came. A little longer.

Saleem left. He sat high above the river on the bridge, chin resting on the pine underrailing. This bridge he found more peaceful than the other.
He was growing weary of "Duty and Righteousness" while merely standing around on a bridge.

Merra's face came. He grinned slightly, and for just a moment let the wind push him closer to the edge. A little farther, a long fall....
The tears came. "Perhaps if she...." Rathalan entered.

Perhaps if you had been a little less judgemental she'd still be alive. But it is what it is. Duty the only responsibility..and when duty is wrong, and you cast your stone, you bare no responsibility for it.

Rathalan exited.

He shook his head slowly.

You still subjugate people to your path and your way of thinking. Protection or no. Stand on the bridge. And wait.

He rose slowly, tightening the cloak around him in the evening chill...and let the breeze guide him back to the safety of the walls.

The breeze blew strong and cool along the plains outside of the city. Farran the Fearless. He shook his head, and hoped that one did not catch. Some men needed titles to feel important...fought and died for them. Death...battle...war...all around. Ceaseless and endless.

You are not a warrior...quit playing at it before you get yourself killed...

The wolf bounded into his head and sat, staring.

You have seen the result...you have lost those you hold dear to it. You have seen the foolishness of those that make war their business...why do you persist in worrying over them?

Farran sighed, tucking his chin into his knees.

If I can aid, I must, no matter those involved. They might be young in mind and brash, and full of wind, but perhaps I can keep them alive.

Let the Adept Preist worry over their healing, their fight is not yours.

And if they are no where to be found again, what then?

It is not your concern. THe lack of leadership, the undisciplined beating of a prisoner and subsequent loss of that prisoner, the questioning of a dying man on his last breath about where an attack happened instead of giving him aid...none of this is your concern.

Isn't it?

Saleem growled, then turned away. Looking back, the wolf let one last thought come...

Be aware that one sunny day, when the cool breeze meets your face, you will be traveling to war, and it is there you will die. And they will continue to live, and not give you or all that you have done a second thought, bacause they are trained for such, and you are not. If you wish to continue this path...you must train.

The wolf quickly ran out of his mind.

Farran sat and thought....

Do I really want to help them? Some of them, yes, others, no. Is it worth my time? SHould I not be focusing on my own path, instead of their constant warfare? Should I care of others who look down their noses and feel nothing toward me?

He stared at the leather while her words ran through his head....

Sometimes life is not fair, Vellya. Sometimes ill fortune finds us at the right place and the right time, and we do what has to be done. And sometimes our actions far exceed the call.

He punched holes in the small leather square with the tip of his knife, as her previous anger washed over him anew...

Sometimes life is not fair Vellya. Sometimes we do things for the benefit of others, only to have them ignored, forgotten and throw in our face. Sometimes we get taken for granted. You think you are the only one?

He contiued to punch holes in the small squares, large enough for a needle to pass through....

Sometimes life is not fair, Vellya. Sometimes we are condemned for going outside of what we are supposed to do because it was not approved. Sometimes the best deeds end in a rebuke.

He sat, looking at the pile of undecorated squares. He grabbed the blue berries from his pack, and began grinding them on the stone.

Sometimes life is not fair, Vellya. No matter how much you do or are capable of, people still judge anew based on what you do not have. No matter how hard you try to prove to others your worthiness, there will always be those that look down upon you.

The blue paste slowly formed as he ground at the berries.

Sometimes life is not fair, Vellya. But always, always, when you are in the darkest pits of anger, greif and despair...if you look hard enough in that deep gloom of a pit, there will be a hand at the top, waiting for you to grab hold and find new purchase.

Farran grinned slightly, as he began to etch the catapult into the first of the patches.

Farran sat by the river, his head hung, eyes to the ground, still and silent. He closed his eyes, hoping the shadow would pas by, hoping it was one of the ones that didn't notice...but it wasn't. THe shadow crept closer to him...

He stilled himself, every nerve in his body aware of where the other was...
Still, the shadow came nearer. This one knew what he was...

THen he heard a sound his heart was not ready for.

"OYE!"

His heart dropped, and he swallowed back the tears that slowly formed.

He put on a slow smile, then turned to face the Shade.

"Amus."

The dwarf stood, staring at him, as his eyes saw through to the hills. The long jagged crack running from the top of the skull to the eye spoke volumes, and his smile widened slightly.

"Finally met one who bested you?"

The ghost grinned, and answered. "Bah! Whole cave a tha buggers. Ey can bite my backplate."

Farran chuckled, then nodded. Then he sighed.

"In my heart, I knew this day would come.....I will see you fit one last time."

Farran put his hand slowly near the angry wound on his head as the blue glow came from his hand. The Glow surrounded Amus, as the wounds of his spirit closed.

"Thank ye, Blind Sage. Ye be a true friend."

Farran nodded slightly, smiled.

"Et's na so bad...after."

Farran nodded, grinned slightly. "I know."

The dwarf looked at him a long moment.

"You should go Amus. THe halls of your kin await."

He nodded, then looked to him earnestly.

"Ef Abbey comes..."

Farran nodded. "I will tell her where to find you."

THe dwarf smiled, and seemed to untense. "Thankee, Farran. A true friend."

He nodded again. "Go my dwarven brother...go and be with your kin, be at peace, and ride among the winds."

THe spirit nodded and turned.

"Amus...."

The spirit looked back for a moment.

"I will never forget you. Thank you. And remember to bathe once in a while."

THe spirit grinned as the breeze blew....and slowly disappeared.

Farran sat alone on the river. He would not mourn, no tears would come. Amus died as he lived...with honor.

"Be at peace, Brother....I will see you after."

He raised his hands to the stars as the spirits of earth, water and air swirled. He reached into the deepest shade of sky blue from the river.

"FOR MY BROTHER I GIVE HOMAGE. LET HIM TRAVEL FAST, TRAVEL SAFE! MAY HIS MEMORY BE EMBLAZONED UPON THE GROUND HE DRENCHED IN RED! MAY HE ALWAYS BE MY BROTHER!"

The white spirits of the air dipped in front of him, and then sped with haste into the air.

As his yell reverberated in the hills Farran bowed his head and whispered...

"Wind bring you home, my friend."

Farran stared at the bars to the crypt a long moment, then looked up to the sky.

He felt slight sorrow for Mordak...and understood. But this day of passing was not one of sorrow...

It always amazed him, the selfishness of a death. Those who mourn, crying for their own loss. Seeing only rainclouds, only sadness.

Farran raised his eyes to the bright sun...to the rebirth... to the after. A day of a new beginning. Amus would always be within, grinning that missing toothed grin.

He looked to the fire before him, as the high pitched gutteral sound began to echo from his mouth...

A song of sounds. An honor to the departed spirit. He closed his eyes and bellowed so that the souls of the after could hear....would know...

He sat for hours, entranced in the intricate weaving of the pattern, the sounds of the grass, of the lightning, of the wolf, of the fire, of the running water, of the blowing wind, the rocks falling from the mountain, the rustle of the leaf...weaving the song, weaving the spirit, weaving the life. Every arch of the voice a point in time, every full moon represented. Pure and untarnished.

As his voice rose to the wind, his cloak and armour were stripped, until only the cloth that covered his waist remained. He took from the earth the ash of the wood made from what was taken by fire and air. THe grey ash of the wood he slowly smeered on his torso...a ribcage slowly painted...to his face...a skull slowly painted...in perfect brilliance and simplicty, his voice floating upon the wind. The water he took his reflection, as he slowly took the deeper black chared remains and added to his face...around his eyes, his nose....his mouth...perfect simplicity.

A rebirth, not just of Amus, but of himself...life without. A new day, a new promise. His voice rang high and clear as the sounds came from within...Everything new. Each tree different, each noise brand new. Each smell like nothing before. THe breeze a balm...the water a chorus. His soul rose through the water to the wind, cleansed, fresh, new, whole, alive.

The only regret Farran had, was that there was to be only one to do the dance. But it was enough. His voice lowered with the sun. He prepared.

Dips the wooden bowl into the stream, careful not to immerse his bone hands.

Scoops the soil into a second bowl.

Places the slow burning inscence into the third bowl.

The tone lowering with the sun, hues of beauty floating in the sky, complete serenity.

As the final bit of sun sunk on the horizon, Farran stood, carrying the bowls, and walked toward the crypt. The first left.

Amus was laid on the floor, his wound cleansed, his armour polished, his axe gripped and laying on his chest, his sheild by his side. Nothing more than a body now...

Farran placed the bowl of burning inscense to the left...his axe arm.

Farran placed the bowl of water to the bottom...feet

Farran placed the bowl of earth to the right...his sheild arm.

Farran stood at the top....his head.

THe spirit that would have been in the middle of the four, now gone. But the ceremony remains.

He softly chanted, as his feet found the rythem. a drum was always best...but not needed. His feet slowly shuffled as his body bobbed, and his head moved. THe soft song continued to be woven, matching the beat the feet found against the cold stone floor. For the new...for the old. His feet found purchase. The vigil would last the night.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, his father's voice echoed...

"Walk the hard path. Be you, no matter what comes. Your feet will become cut and bruised. Your face weathered. You will feel pain and sorrow. No matter these things. The path IS hard...nothing good ever comes easily. For one day, when you have walked the path long enough that your soles are calloused, that your face is of stone, and the pain and sorrow are but the everyday....the sun will crack the clouds above. And something so powerful, so moving, so amazing, will happen. You will love, and you will be loved...and because you have walked the hard path, she will love you for you...not because you try to impress, or show bravado, or outbest. She will see what you are...and she will be drawn to it. Farran...walk the hard path. I did. And never have I regretted it...your mother is my life."

The words rang in his ears. He sat on the corner of the bed, watching the slow rise and fall of her breathing. His father's final words to him...he smiled as a tear slowly ran down his cheek. The sun had split his clouds...a million sky sparklers and stars exploded in each moment. Happy...was a watered down word to what he felt. She turned her head slightly in her sleep, her hand still holding on to his. Beautiful was but a shade of a word...no words at all could be formed. He smiled, watching her...slowly running a finger across her forehead parting the fire from her face.

He had never once felt like this...no amount of helping, nor seeing new things, nor seeing friends...nothing came even remotely close. He was on fire....floating above the ground, away from any awareness of the physical. Completely away from himself. He could not stop smiling...

She squeezed his hand in her sleep, and he watched her in pure amazement...of her...of himself...of the moment.

He leaned slowly over her, and squeezed her hand gently as he kissed her forehead. He brought his face inches from hers, and stared a moment..then whispered softly.

"I will never hurt. I will always have you alone in my heart. No matter what comes, no matter how hard...I will walk the path by your side. You will never doubt what you have blessed me with."

He carefully laid down beside her...and in her sleep she put her arm around him...and the world, for the first time, truely did disappear.

Between the three bowl and himself, the spirit slowly hovered over the body. Farran watched as the shade slowly realized.

"Am I dead?"

Farran nodded slowly.

"You are passed beyond."

The shade looked at him a long moment.

Farran hated these times. The time for acceptance of what was.

The shade looked about a long moment, then slowly nodded in acceptance and resignation.

"The wolf...."

Farran nodded slowly.

"They are fast and quiet at time. One came at myself today...."

Camerion nodded slowly.

Farran watched the shade a long moment.

"I will help see you to the gate."

Camerion nodded slowly.

"I am sorry I was not there, Camerion. But I am here for you now."

Again, the shade nodded.

"Go in peace, and be at peace. Know that your passing is thought on by many."

THe wind spirits slowly circled around the body. Farran watched silent for a moment.

He whispered softly...

"Servants of Akadi...I call upon your aid once more. See this spirit to the gates, for his name is written in the book. Make his going swift and easy...as a servant to her name, I thank you from the depths for your service."

Camerion showed a flicker of a smile before disapperaing with the wind.

And Farran began his dance.

***Special thanks to Sintaqx for the song below***

Her soft, quavering voice lilted through the air as Farran closed his eyes.

"Let me run through forests of the night
A lonely wolf; a heart so wild and free
"

*******
He slowly lowered Jade's body to the stone of the crypt. Near lay Camerion...

Farran handled death well, but with so many so close...it was harder. And it had always been easier dealing with males....the soft, young face of the female looked to the ceiling, glassy eyes staring into the depths of his soul, before he pushed the lids down. He felt a slow rending. Much harder with females. He placed the bowls in their appropriate places...and let the soft song of this sould come forth from his mouth. THe preist looked in for a moment, then nodded slightly, going back to his work...he was used to Farran. And Farran was used to this. He longed for the sight of Vellya's face....but he knew he could not see her in the state of mind he found himself in...the feelings had been turned off.
********************

"On feet so fast they make my joy take flight
My home the woodlands, where I'll ever be
Beneath the mighty fir, the birch, the pine
A landscape suited well for solitude
"

**********************

He stared at the moon. He had been in Rivermoot too long...he had had to clear his head. So here he sat, soaking wet after wading across the river. THe Keep loomed in the distance, behind him....he turned away from the building and looked out among the grasslands. As the moon rose, he began to chant...to let the sorrow within the depths of himself fly away upon the breeze. Alone, in the wilds...like when he was young.

The soft patter came to him as he opened his eyes and let the chanting fade. In front of him floated a beauty with wings, an air spirit of the forests. And all of the sadness fell away...and he watched her aerobatics as she giggled. THe wind blew hard, and she flew backwards, laughing and giggling. THe grin would not leave...she spoke words he could not understand...but she could understand his name...and that of Akadi. As she flew close and kissed his cheek before flying off...he longed to see Vellya. His soul washed clean from the experience....his solitude once again finding him purchase.
*****************************************

"And all I see and all I hear are mine
My howl is poetry, bereft of all that's crude
The spirit of the wild forever more
Inhabit me, possess this earthly form
"

***********************************************

The wind had carried his feet, though he had slowed to a walk once...and his face was red. His steps echoed in the cave, the Locksmith behind him with bow ready. As the goblins poked their heads from behind the crates, he howled madly, and charged, spear posed to strike. An arrow flew by, the locksmith taking the first in the throat as his spear found the side of the second. Both fell...and on the cavern floor beyond lay the Locksmiths friend. He rushed to his side....but what is done is done. He held back the howl, and slowly picked up the body, making his way from the darkness.

***********************************************

"And change me right down to my inner core
To make me feel forever safe and warm
Embrace the wildness surging through your veins
And howl with joy and cast off all your reins!"

*****************************************

He opened the gate, and her face lit up into the brightest star he had ever seen. His soul rose to heights...ever higher as she ascended the stairs toward him. As she put her arms around him, the spear fell from his hand, and he slowly embraced her...slowly found peace...and all of the darkness faded into nothing. Pure.

I run with you in misty dream...hunting. You run by my side. A howl at the moon, a scent...you are near, I am close. All and Each. The Raven with Blood Eye flies above, poised to plummet gracefully for the strike. Wolves...one with a black horsehead on her forehead, the other striking ahead and alone, leading the way. Two lions gait beside, both with hand and eye on their fur. Large Badger with mottled fur sniffs and lolls beside, a small frail stone on her neck. A bear with many stones and a keen smile...an axe patterned on it's fur.

We stalk in the mist night dream, each their own path, their own dreams, their own desires. The air is crisp and cool, the breeze ever blowing...an elemental behind, baring a flail. Slide through the grass, the dew covering the face...slide under trees, over rocks. No danger...just a gathering. A gathering of spirits...in the dream.
