Night Hunt

Post by psycho_leo »

Nunzio asked me for help. Werewolf problems. A friend of his got bit… infected. Bad idea. We should find him and kill him. Its dangerous. But Nunzio asked. I can’t refuse. I set up my gear and we leave the town. Selune is there… in all her splendor. Normally would be a good thing… but tonight is different.

My tracking skills are rust… spent too much time in big cities, but I found the cave the other night… how hard can it be? And besides, the hummie is coming too.

The hummie smells it first... smoke… on the top a small hill. He is good. I go ahead… hiding in the shadows. That’s what I do best... Hide... I approach carefully. It is the vistani. I never met him. I never saw a vistani before, but I know. He has that mad gleam on his eyes. He is losing his mind. Losing his soul to Malar. He’s tying a rope to a tree… what’s he doing? He is going to hang himself… he knows his time is coming to an end. He will be a spawn of Malar soon. We should end this now… or let him do it, but Nunzio is convinced Chania can help. I won’t argue.

Renunzio wants to talk to him. I won’t argue… but I don’t trust him on this. Thank the gods for trees and shadows. Blessed be the chameleon. I go around the hill… my steps are soft… the leather is good. I should thank the armorer in the misty forest. I don’t make a sound. The trees make good cover… I can see him… but he didn’t notice me. He is exposed. Would only take one shot. Nunzio convinces him to come peacefully... maybe he is right... maybe Chania can help… maybe Selune will take pity. I hope he is right.

We make our way to the temple… its far… but we travel light... and we travel fast. Howls…Damn… It’s never easy, is it?

Werewolves! They come for the Vistani… and blood. I scream something… I can’t think… I can hear my father…

“Don’t think girl! There’s no time to think. If you stop to think you’re dead. Remember what I thought you”

“Shut up old man… You thought me about drow. Not about werewolves.”

“It’s the same… they all want you dead. Don’t think… trust your instincts”

I should run… NO! I am thinking. Don’t think. Don’t turn your back. One step back… I draw an arrow. Christophen fired an arrow… didn’t work… he charged it with a silver blade. Two steps back… I let it fly. I hit it square in the chest. The creature backs away… It’s surprised… tried to run… exposed its back… big mistake… the second arrow finishes it… no more howling for Malar… one last gurgle and its over. There were two… Where’s the other? … The vistani… Nunzio… I run… still not thinking… Akbar is fighting it. He can’t hurt it... He will die…No. I won’t let it. It won’t hurt my friends. Not again. Never again. Before I noticed an arrow was flying… I don’t miss. The creature is still alive… it turns to me. It will kill me… I run… I am thinking again.

“Don’t think girl! There’s no time!”
The beast lunges towards me. His teeth find my flesh… its over. It howls again… a howl of pain. I open my eyes… the “hummie” saved me. No time… can’t think. One step back…I draw an arrow… two steps back… it’s still coming for me… it’s too close… can’t think. I let if fly… it goes straight into his open jaws… he trembles… tries to grab me with his claws… it is dying… and too slow. It’s dead… I can think again. Blessed be the chameleon… I need mead.

I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.~~Groucho Marx
