Vala's Diary

Post by Mulu »

Valkyrie ActII, scene II

Wotan: Farwell then, imperious pomp! Godly show's resplendent shame! Let all I raised now fall to ruins! My work I abandon; one thing alone do I want
The end!....The end!

And Albrich will see to that end! Only now do I fathom the silent sense of Vala's mysterious words: "When love's dark foe begets a son in his fury, the end of the gods won't be long delayed!" Of the Nibelung I lately heard it told that the dwarf had had his way with a woman whose favours gold had gained for him. A woman harbours the seed of hate; the force of envy stirs in her womb: the wonder befell the loveless dwarf; yet I who wooed in love cannot father one who is free!

So take my blessing, Nibelung son! What I loathe most deeply I leave as your legacy: godhood's empty glitter. May your envy greedily gnaw it away!

*The first several pages have been torn out*

Dear Diary,
Well, the money is spent, as usual. Though the old lout certainly had some coin. I still can't believe he actually thought I was his long lost daughter! Sometimes, it's too easy. Still, I could use some new boots... guess I'd better find a new mark.

Dear Diary,
The old lout had some friends in high places. I should have suspected as much. The house guard got a good look at me too, especially the tall one, Lance. Maybe more on him later. I can't stay in this town any longer. Same old story....

Dear Diary,
Boy did I have to leave town fast! Left most of my stuff behind, and had just enough coin on me to book passage. Not exactly a nobleman's yacht, but it will suffice.

Dear Diary,
I've hooked up with a small band of mercenaries, hell bent on discovering what's at the bottom of some pit. Lead by a paladin, so it's probably on the up and up. Not exactly my preferred method of making a living, but it took about thirty seconds before the paladin was eating out of my hands, much to the chagrin of the only other woman around, some fighter type named Elizabeth.

Dear Diary,
The pit was full of goblin slaves making weapons and armor, along with some nastier creatures.... There were a lot of weapons, enough to equip a small army. Not exactly easy loot to carry out. I grabbed one that looked enchanted, and after killing some evil priest we took charge of the place. Those goblins are actually kinda cute, very willing to please. Their last master mistreated them horribly. Elizabeth said she was going back to town, along with another of our group. The paladin, a dwarf and I are going to hold the fort; he thinks the priest was dealing weapons to other humanoids, possibly bugbears, and wants to lay an ambush for them. Well, actually he wants to challenge them in glowing plate mail, but I've convinced him that an ambush would be more practical, and still uphold his honor. Paladins....

Dear Diary,
We caught some bugbears who were coming in to buy weapons. They didn't stand a chance, thanks to my ambush plan. We discovered little from them though, as the paladin wouldn't let me use my other arts of persuasion, and tensions have run high between us as a result. We did discover the weapons were going to some place near Shadowdale. Then the dwarf went absolutely nuts and killed all the goblin slaves! Something about a blood oath. I'll never understand dwarves. The paladin has been in deep prayer ever since, and the dwarf is drunk and muttering to his dead relatives. The rest of our party still hasn't returned, and I fear the worst. What a pit this turned out to be....

Dear Diary,
I've convinced the paladin we have to return to town, even if it means leaving the weapons behind. I've laid some traps, including some he doesn't know about, like poisoning the goblin wine and food with spider venom from the spiders we killed earlier. It's not like any friendly types would eat or drink that stuff.

Dear Diary,
After informing the local ruler of what we found, the paladin wants to go to Sembia, to follow some lead, or something. Admittedly, I was only half listening to him. At any rate, he's agreed to pay for my passage, though after talking to the captain, I discovered we will be stopping in Selgaunt. From there I can go wherever I like. I'll have to ditch the paladin at the docks; he has spent his usefulness to me. I think I'll use the name Night here. It's easy to remember, anyway.

Dear Diary,
This may be my last entry. Guess I shouldn't have left the dock alone after all. I was jumped by a bandit. A guard happened upon us and managed to kill him, but not before he wounded me grievously. I passed out in the street, and lied there for who knows how long. When I awoke it was dark and I managed to drag myself into an abandoned building. Someone stole my magic blade. I'm so tired. I've lost alot of blood. My candle is almost spent. I can't believe it's going to end like this.

Dear Diary,
After spending several days in a dream-like stupor, I finally got enough strength to limp to a temple and get healed. I've since been able to actually explore Selgaunt a bit. It's pretty wrecked from the war still, but it is exotic, and overrun with thugs. I paid a visit to Copper Alley and paced one from the shadows, then shot him with my bow right between the shoulder blades, payback for my off the docks experience. Now it's time to go.

Dear Diary,
After spending some time in Northern Cormyr, I went to Arabel. It's no city of splendors, but it's not bad. Certainly alot of merchants. But I'm having trouble finding any work. I've heard rumors of a lot of "adventurers" in Shadowdale, and I think I'm going to check them out.

Dear Diary,
Well, Shadowdale is certainly a town of contrasts. A sleepy little farming village that houses probably the most powerful man in the world, Elminster. I've met several Whitestars, as they call themselves, basically adventurers who act as the law up here. They seem easy enough to get along with. I've also met quite a few elves, pretty much all rangers and druids. Nice people, but it's going to take me some time to get used to them. I took a patrol job with some of them, and got thoroughly chewed out on my skills. Oh well, I have no desire to march along roads the rest of my life anyway, that's a job for chumps. Though it does pay surprisingly well.

Dear Diary,
I finally met someone I can relate to here. His name is Velyn, an elf with my tastes. After upsetting nearly all of the righteous folk around here, I think he's my only friend.

Dear Diary,
The elven druids have almost all left for Daggersprings. There is apparently some sort of Druid circle there. I may have to go there and visit them someday. They kind of grew on me, no pun intended.

Dear Diary,
Dangerous times. I've heard of someone or something named Karadine. I'm told he's a vampire wizard of tremendous power. He apparently summoned a demon and had it capture a woman named Nicha and take her to the Abyss. Several people have died, including a high priest and some town official. A planar tower is popping in and out, bandits are crawling everywhere, the fey have gone mad and are trying to kill everyone, and rumors of drow abound. I've seen the Drow's handiwork, and it isn't pretty. I've spoken to Velyn and he agrees, it's time to go somewhere else for awhile.

Dear Diary,
I decided to try something crazy and approached the White Sparrow goblins. They seem unthreatening enough. I managed to convice them I meant them no harm, and I've spent a couple weeks trying to learn their language. I think I can work out a deal with the powers that be in Shadowdale to basically sign a treaty with this goblin tribe. Well, that's the idea anyway. We'll see if the Shadowdale leaders can get over their prejudices. I still feel I owe a debt to goblins for letting that dwarf kill all of those goblin slaves. I just need to rebalance the scales, as it were. Besides, they seem eager to please. At least it kept my mind off the dangers here in Shadowdale.

Dear Diary,
I escorted a kind druidess to Daggerfalls, so she could join the others in the Springs. I am relieved to be out of Shadowdale. Still, I miss some of the people I met there. Well, I'll just lay low here and listen for news from the east.

Dear Diary,
I escorted a hin priest of Gond back to Shadowdale. Things have calmed a bit. Elminster got Nicha back, the fey are back to normal, and the vampire seems quiescent for now. My nerves are better, and I can sleep here again. It's still dangerous, but at least it's not overwhelming. And I'm learning to speak elven!

Dear Diary,
Poor Greppi is dead, slain by kobolds. I didn't get to know him very well, but I think I'm going to miss the little guy. Elves are so serious all the time. Well, other than Velyn.

I made some more inroads with the White Sparrow goblins. I'm getting pretty good at their language. Turns out they are all escaped slaves, or the descendants of escaped slaves. Their leader, Groshnar, is genuinely concerned for their safety. Though they come from different places, they have all come together here to try and find some safety. They are all terrified of the bandits and the vampire as well.

Charney is becoming more receptive to the idea. At least he lets me finish what I want to say now. Trying to persuade him is like trying to chip a statue out of a block of granite, it takes a long time and a lot of little blows. But I'm getting there.

Dear Diary,
I met a very powerful wizard named Aravilar. I had heard about him, but I was quite surprised to meet him. He looks very young, but he's elven so who knows how old he is. It wasn't at all like meeting Elminster, he was nice and very approachable. I got to practice some of my elven on him.

We had an interesting encounter with a couple of fey. They apparently really enjoy cherry pie. So I don't forget later, Velyn mentioned he likes raspberry pie. Look at me, thinking about baking for him.

Dear Diary,
Three men were put on trial for killing a child. Turns out it was some sort of drow plot, involving an illusion of a drow warrior cast on a child. That trick wouldn't work on me. I'd just run and hide if I saw a drow warrior.

Dear Diary,
Velyn and I went to Arabel to go shopping. We had a good trip. I was a little disappointed in the City of Merchants, seems most of the shops were closed. They must be going through some sort of a slump there. Still, we got to eat a nice dinner at a fine restaurant, and I spent all of my money, a thousand gold, on a clothes shopping binge. I really needed it. Of course, the next day in good light I realized most of the outfits were poorly made or just didn't look right on me, so I sold almost all of them back for a pittance of what I had paid for them. Then I went and bought a nicely balanced rapier, to replace the one I lost, and some olive green leathers. My black studded leather just doesn't look right outdoors, and it was getting a little ratty anyway.

Velyn made it pretty obvious that he thought we were a couple, though he backpedaled quickly when I told him we were just friends. I haven't decided where I want this to go yet. Certainly no rush, elves take years to court.

A city girl surrounded by elven rangers and druids in the country. This is very different from what I imagined my life would turn out like.

Dear Diary,
The drow seem to be the only thing anyone wants to talk about. They apparently go by many names. I'll have to see if Perrin has a book on them, since my ignorance is starting to show. A follower of the Night Hunter is someone who hunts drow. The Night Hunter is an elven god that apparently really doesn't like drow. The drow were cursed many thousands of years ago by the All Father. Drow drow drow. Now I'm doing it. As curious as I am, I think I'd rather not meet one.

Dear Diary,
Well, I've not been keeping up with my entries. A lot has happened, but the most important is the most recent, so I suppose I'll just skip to the present. I've decided to return home to Waterdeep, after being away for nine years. Part of the reason is to try to reconcile with the folks, part of it is to try my luck back in the big city, but most of it comes from never really finding a role here in Shadowdale. A city girl in the country, my best skills go unused. Why, I haven't touched a trap in over a year. I've learned so much here and made many friends, but it just isn't home. My only real concern is how Velyn will take it.

Dear Diary,
I've met a couple of hin from the 'deep, Muggs and his cousin Snickals; definitely urban types. Coincidences abound, as they wish to return. It would be nice to have company on that long road, and they obviously have connections with the underworld there. Even if we can't travel together, it will be good to know someone upon arrival. Assuming they don't get themselves killed here. I think they assume that because Shadowdale is a quiet town it is safe. It's a bad assumption to make.

Dear Diary,
I finally had some private time with Velyn to talk about my leaving. He seemed a bit disappointed, but then revealed to me that he's becoming romantically involved with Arien, or at least trying to. Good for him. The funniest part was he was worried I would be upset about it. Frankly, I was relieved. I will miss him, but this makes things a lot less complicated. We've promised to write, and I will keep up my end of the bargain. I want to stay informed of goings on in Shadowdale. I told him I would be away for one or two years, but in all honesty it may be longer. We'll see how things go.

Dear Diary,
I'm not the best trip planner it seems. On a routine patrol I ended up traveling most of northern Shadowdale with a large group. I finally decided I needed to get back and separated, but now I'm in the woods and a bit lost. Well, I'll cross a road eventually. Then I have to gather my things, get equipped and start my journey. Oh, and I need to plan my route, though it won't be too different from how I came out here. I hope Arabel has broken the goblin seige, it's the easiest way out that I know of. I'm thinking of going through Beregost, even though it's a bit out of the way, just to see if Julian is there, though he's been spending a lot of time in Shadowdale recently from what I've heard. We don't seem to cross paths.

Dear Diary,
Using my superb scouting skills I was able to head due west until I crossed the North road at about marker four. I went North to check on the farmers who had recently been attacked by orcs. They were understandably shaken, but otherwise back to business as usual. On heading back to town I encountered a dinner-plate sized beetle that charged at me. It was simple enough to shoot with an arrow, and it died quickly, but I gave it a wide clearance anyway. I didn't even retrieve the arrow, it could have eggs or something. Bugs, ick.

Back in town I went to Pierren's and puchased a couple of travel guides. I noted in the introduction that they are edited by Elminster himself, so I assume the information is good. I should write a travel journal some day. What an easy job; hop from inn to inn and write about your experiences. All I'd need is a patron to pay the bills.

Anyway, I took a Coster ride to the south fort and walked to Tilverton road. I was concerned about goblin activity, but had no problem riding with a caravan to the East Gate of Arabel City. It was quite peaceful and I noticed no damage, so whatever damage had been done must already be repaired. There were mage enforcers out, so they are still on alert. I was able to enter the city with a wave and a smile.

In the city I did a little shopping, even though I told myself all of my money was for the trip. Well, I only bought a couple of new outfits, and some dye for my armor. Field greens just isn't going to look good in the city. I went with black. Now I'm staying in a nice inn, and relaxing with a glass of wine, some cheese and a soft bed after taking a long hot bath. It's good to be in a real city again. Traveling alone isn't so bad. I already feel like I'm getting back in touch with myself. The worries of vampires, drow and shadows are washing off of me with each step.

Tomorrow I set out on the road for Baldur's Gate. It's a long road, but well traveled, so I'm not expecting a lot of problems. Hopefully I can find another caravan, or at least a horse to ride.

Dear Diary,
I awoke to the sound of alarms from the East Gate. Being more curious than wise I went out to see what the fuss was all about, and walked right into the middle of a skirmish. Kheren was there, and a druid named Bron, so fortunately I didn't get cut down and gutted by goblin invaders. After the battle was over, fires erupted in a four within eight pattern. I recognized it as a totemic sigil to the goblin god Maglubiyet, god of war and fire. I've learned quite a bit about goblin culture from my White Sparrows. There is definitely at least one high shaman within the goblin war camp. I advised the defenders that they should seek him out. If they can take him out of the picture, the army will likely break up and go away.

Well, back to my journey home!

Dear Diary,
I am now in Nashkell, staying in the local inn. Beregost is to the Northwest along The Coast Way, and from there Baldur's Gate. After I arrive in Baldur's Gate I intend to take a ship to Waterdeep to avoid the Tradeway, which the locals tell me is plagued with bandits. Though I suppose if I can find a caravan to travel with I should be fairly safe.

I saw some bugbears not too far outside of town, but they were easy to avoid. Otherwise it's been a peaceful, if long, journey from Arabel.

It's nice to be out of the rain.

Dear Diary,
Beregost is a charming little town. I can see why Julian likes it so much. Though the whole place feels like one big temple.

The road north to Baldur's gate was clear, and I took Balduran's Blade to the deep. Stayed at the Grey Serpent at first, to keep low. I've been in town about a week now, and still haven't visited the folks, but it's nice to hang out at the clubs I used to know.

My old mentor died while I was away. I wish I could have seen her one last time before the end.

Dear Diary,
Well, I visited my mother. My father refused to talk to me. According to mother, his business has been down, apparently due to trade difficulties through Anauroch. She claims the shades are attacking caravans, and I suppose it's possible. Mother has aged a great deal since I've left, even though it's only been ten years. My older brother, Araven, now tends to father's shop management duties, and is married with two children. I stopped by to see him, and he was pleasant enough. I'm glad life is treating him well. He invited me over for dinner, and I'll go and meet the sure to be haughty woman who now passes our bloodline.

Dear Diary,
I was doing some work for the city watch, knocking out thugs and dragging them back for incarceration, when something bad happened. I had dragged about six of the louts in during the course of the night, and was getting very tired, so after getting paid by the captain I found a quiet corner and drew my cloak over me to rest. I guess I dozed off, because I woke up a few hours later to a strange sight. The guards were all pacing around acting weird, like they had taken a narcotic. I tried to leave and the door was locked. I asked the Captain to open it and he just ignored me. The bars to the scribe were also locked, so there was no one else to talk to. I noticed the door upstairs was open, so I slipped upstairs and snooped around a bit. They had a lot of belladona. I've heard that belladona can have a narcotic-like effect, and so surmised that the guards must have had a fright, thinking they were under attack by shapeshifters, barred the front door shut, and took too much belladonna. Now they were mulling around acting nutters. It was like an opium den. Well, except they were active and carrying swords.

I went back downstairs and couldn't reason with any of them, so I tried another door. It was unlocked, but as soon as I opened it, they all went beserk and tried to kill me! Thank the gods I had a potion of invisibility on me, which I drank immediately. I managed to get past them, and with everyone looking for me downstairs I got the door unbarred and got out. I'm never going back in there again. Hopefully they all slept it off and forgot about it.

I've decided to stay at the Safehaven Inn for now. There are many adventurous types there, and I find I like that company. I've met an elf from the far east by the name of Jubei, and he's taken me under his wing. He reminds me a lot of Velyn. I don't know what it is with me and much older, dark-haired elven men.

Dear Diary,
I've been given an opportunity to join a guild of, well vagabonds for lack of a better term. I think I'll use it as an opportunity to practice my infiltration skills. And who knows, it could lead to something interesting. Ever since Rose offered to make poison for me I've been curious about the possibility of using it. Perhaps I can get trained on how to use it by these people.

Dear Diary,
Jubei told me of a job, escorting a mage to Daggerford. I accepted of course, and we had a pleasant boat ride and walk. He seemed a kind sort, but when we got there he claimed he didn't have the coin! I though Jubei was going to cut his head off at first, but he calmed and took it in stride. Even so, the man gave me what coin he had and ran off in fear. That's fine, maybe he'll think he owes us one and we can collect on it as a favor some day.

Dear Diary,
Well, the Watch have apparently branded me a criminal, or so I've heard through my contacts. Nothing too serious, I'm sure it will just be a fine, but they apparently didn't like me crashing their belladonna party. Fine. I'm not here to be the law anyway. Let them worry about the thugs. It keeps them busy and unable to look into other things.

I'm tempted to hire a lawyer and threaten to go public with their drug use. I'm sure the various trade guilds wouldn't be pleased to find out how their taxes are being spent. Still, I don't need the spotlight myself, especially not right now. I may be able to bluff with it though, get them to back off and drop the charge. It's not like I'm rolling in coin.

Dear Diary,
Jubei is proving to be a good mentor. He told me of some trouble in Beregost, and when we got there we were met by some others and found out drow were in the area. Drow. I had thought I left that behind me in Shadowdale. Four of us went outside the gate to scout the situation, Jubei, myself, an elven woman named Tel, and another whose name escapes me now, a paladin. Anyway, I found them, a drow raiding party, looking exactly as Velyn had described them to me. In my head I went over the training in drow tactics he had given me, and then used some of my own. I laid some traps, and Jubei and I feinted an attack, falling back through the trapped area. That killed two. On cue, Tel and the paladin charged the wizard and Jubei and I went back and fought with the remaining warriors. It was close, but we managed them well enough. I was glad for Velyn's training. I took a suit of drow studded leather armor as a trophy. Maybe, with enough alterations, I can make it into something useful.

Apparantly the drow had been following some elf. I never did get the whole story as Tel ran off after the fight, and Jubei took me back to his house in Beregost. He really is a good cook. Beregost is a wonderful little town. I could see living there. Someday, maybe.

Dear Diary,
It seems everyone in Waterdeep wants someone else's severed head, preferably on a platter. The first one seemed simple enough, he was a bugbear after all and with a little help I managed to slay the beast and carry his bagged head back unnoticed. But the second was, well I probably shouldn't even write it down. He was not a good man, and it was the only way I could get into the guild. Still... this is the path of Love's Dark Foe. The one C.N. warned me about. No, I can't write about him yet.

I spent all my coin washing, repairing and altering that drow armor to my taste and size. It looks great. My tailor is a genius.

Jubei has taken another under his wing, a swordsman from... oh I really need to work on my geography. Anyway, from somewhere in Kara Tur. His name is Jian, and I think I'll be seeing a lot of him. We make a good team, the three of us.

Dear Diary,
Jubei and I heard more rumors about Shades in the Silver Marches, so having nothing better to do we decided to just go look for ourselves. The Silverymoon guard claimed they had no problems at all, so we went by foot to Sundabar. The mountains have been having trouble with what appear to be Red Slaads attacking caravans. We saw evidence, but no actual Slaads. We met up with a dwarf on the road, and headed into Sundabar. Apparently there is an army of shades in Anauroch. They were all waiting for the attack in Sundabar, but nothing was actually happening yet. Still, it was good to get real information from the front line instead of just relying on rumors, and I got to travel to places I had never been to before. Silverymoon is an amazing city. The open use of mythar was just astonishing.

Dear Diary,
I've been invited to audition for a part in a play that will be performed at the Siren! It's being run by a half orc named... gosh, Regor I think. I really must start writing names down. Well, he'll be easy enough to recognize. He said I should play the part of a were-tigress! I guess my cat affinity shows.

Dear Diary,
Julian is in town. Apparently he and Jubei have some bad blood between them. It turned out to be a very long story, involving some hero gone bad named Eveningstar. Jubei also confided his private history to me and Jian. It was more than anyone should have to live through.
