There is no inconsistency Burt. I will explain further:

Situation one:
Shey, Amenia, and Inthara encounter Jain’n and the warband. Shey & Co. try to slip by undetected using hoods and veils. Jain’n and warband detect their drow accents and surround them, ordering them to put up their weapons. Shey strikes Jain’n and the fight is on. When Shey, Amenia and Inthara lose, they are imprisoned. Over the next few real life weeks and in-game months, Jain’n attempts to convert them. Eventually, Inthara indicates she follows Eilistraee while Amenia and Shey indicate a willingness to drop their faith in Lolth. At that point, Jain’n takes them to the sacred circle; purpose being to have Eilistraee indicate whether they have, in fact, dropped their faith in Lolth and are open to conversion. If not, then they are lying to escape prison and their sentence is death.

Situation two:
Naraje encounters Jain’n and Shey. Naraje approaches them openly, without trying to slip by. She does not attack. She professes to follow the maiden and not to follow Lolth. Thus, Naraje is already at the point Shey was at after months of imprisonment. Thus, there is no need for the imprisonment. So, since Naraje is at the same point Shey was, Jain’n does the same thing: he takes her to the circle. If found false, she will be put to death just as Shey would have been.

In short, once a drow professes to be open to the Maiden, and not to follow Lolth, that is when J takes them to the circle.

Now, why if found false, J kills them rather than putting more effort into converting them? I do not know. Its one of the problems Shey had in-character. I suppose it is because you have to cut your losses somewhere. You cannot try to convert someone forever – eventually you have to ‘fish or cut-bait’ as the saying goes. J’s point of no return is, apparently, the point at which a drow professes to be open to the Maiden. If that turns out to be a lie, J is done with the person (and the person is likely done).

So, ultimately, there was no inconsistency in J's behavior: the inconsistency is in the situations presented by Naraje (claiming to be a follower of the Maiden from the start, and thus ready for the test) and Sheyreiza (still faithful to Lolth when found, and thus not ready for the test).

Though I still don't find the differences in behaviour to be either consistent or sensical, I'll concede the argument on the basis that I never really cared that much to begin with.

So.. Eilistraee has an understanding with Shevaresh to kill drow that remain evil.

makes sense since Eilistraee hates the evil drow that follow lolth, even though it is an extreme arrangement perhaps in this instance it was the best possible agreement to be had with shevaresh.

Now, whether the victim was evil or not can be debated, but since she was taken away by Eilistraee, I'll assume she was good, so how then can the godess deem this right?

Was it not so that an innocent drow was killed? and if so would she not have her priestess remain? Instead she commands her to overlook the death of a drow.

It's either a god gone political, keeping her pacts above her dogmas, or the bitch was evil...

So.. was she evil or not?

Was the woman we found evil or not?

How would I know?

My guess is that she was not evil. My guess is that she was perfectly 'good' and may have even been Eilistraee in disguise (at least as far as I/Shey knows).

Though she was not evil, Eilistraee wanted me to accept the 'pact' with Shevaresh - this does NOT mean she wanted me or Jain'n to kill this particular woman. My best guess is that if we had gone through the ceremony/test that Eilistraee would have sent a sign (usually flowers appearing in the snow) and we would have welcomed the newcomer with open arms.

That being said, Shey was not going to even allow the test to occur if there was even a possibility that someone was going to get sacrificed to Shevaresh. Shey is not some evil, child-killing, Waterdhavian 'Paladin' after all; she has morals. ;)

Why else do you think I came to the Promenade and am now trying to get Tel rezzed?

Oops...did I say that out loud? You there, mr. duncan, avert your (filthy Vyshaan tainted) eyes!
