Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition
I bought this game Seems ok. Only, the combat is so terrible. Mostly because I suck at it. I guess this is what Da:2 was like? Didnt play that one, only DA:O. Anyway, combat super bad. Whats the deal with the action shit instead of the tactical, more turn-based style of yesteryear?

One was fun, two was crap.
There was nothing turn based about 2. It was just like one with a different view basically.
What do you mean turn based combat?
I was thinking about playing this one.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
There is no turn based combat. The combat is NOTHING like the first game. Its really pretty bad - ya hold down the left click mouse button to 'auto attack' then have to release it to move around. Then special moves are number buttons. Ya can press 'T' and it goes to an overhead view and pauses where you can give orders to each character, but it doesnt really work all that well once it goes back into real time because the damage, combat and game itself isnt really made for that style of play, meaning youll be pressing 'T' 97 times for each mook you face simply on account of how much damage you are doing vs their health...it just doesnt work.
As I said, Im interested in the characters and story after roughly 9 hours of play, but the combat and general game mechanics are really making it tough for me.

I think it would probably play better with a controller. I could try that.

Mass effect series. (Ignore the repetitive grindy side quest stuff on mass effect 1)

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Better combat than the second one, but thats not saying much. At least on normal tactical pausing is unnecessary and the camera is so clunky that it seems too much annoyance to make me want to turn difficulty up and have to use it.
General design wise I think they went too big. Trying to ape Skyrim/MMORPG huge world to wander around in with lots of generic quests of fetch this and that. Thats not really something i can stomach doing for more than an hour.
That sounds pretty negativ overall, but world + NPC character building seems as good as with any Bioware game. Voice acting and sound feels pretty excellent. Story wise cant really judge if its good, i frequently get stuck in a chain of fetch, explore, murder quests that i feel i have to do before i can move on to next area. Probably a problem with my head.
On the plus side, theres a feature/bug that gives NPCs great trouble to correctly identify the gender of my elf. Long live Lady Inquisitor Sparkles with the deep brit voice.

Feature. As it should be, no doubt. We need more of this in ALFA.causk wrote:feature/bug that gives NPCs great trouble to correctly identify the gender of my elf. Long live Lady Inquisitor Sparkles with the deep brit voice.

I have bad news, dwarven males are not properly recognized by their glorious beard or baritone either. But not to worry, you can probably still start your lesbian love affair with the elf thief. As an extra your attempts at flirtation will go unvoiced so that no one overhearing will ever know.
As a lesson for all:
Dont switch around gender when you start a new campaign, apparantely QA was sleeping.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
So, one to miss then? I loved Dragon age one... but I guess there was no way they could top it. The only thing Dragon Age 2 shares is the name. I really hoped they would sort things out for 3.
Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Depends what you are looking for. Its a good game, its probably as good as or better than any of the recent Bioware games. But its not trying to do the same thing as Dragon Age: Origins (which i loved aswell). None of beginning branches to get you settled in the world and invested in a story. Instead you go from "public enemy number 1" to the fantasy trope of "our chosen lord and savior" in an hour or two. So far its alot of Power Fantasy (you mow down alot of enemies rather easily) , some Strategy level/minigame, talking to relatively well written companiosn and exploring areas to find random quest things. For exploring you are relatively free to choose how to progress, though you can run into enemies that you wont be able to defeat until a certain level. So overall bastard child of MMORG/Skyrim open world, Bioware writing and generic combat/progression system that shouldnt be too complicated for anyone.
So if any of that seems appealing, its probably money well spent. If you look for a game that has good combat, good story pacing woven together neatly, youll probably be disappointed.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
This might explain a thing or two about why things aren't like they used to. It's because the game on PC is just a console port.
pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.
