I always thought the missing link refered most frequently to the stage where man broke off from the other apes.

Yeah, but they didn't find that one, so they're naming this one the missing link to make it sound more interesting than it really is.

Yeah... that's the impression I got as well. I love learning about evolution (doubly so human stuff) - I'm one of these people who sits down with a horribly dry text book on the subject and can be enthralled for hours on end. But this... wow, yet another pre-historic monkey like thing. Give it 10 years and they'll uncover yet an older, better preserved species, that they'll go on to call another missing link.

Hmm.. I guess it's fair to say it's a missing link, but not The Missing Link.
