United States

This time next week, I'll be on a plane in the middle of the Pacific on the way to a five month 'holiday' in the US, followed by a three month visit to Costa Rica. So yes, I'm going to be away from ALFA for 8 months, til the begining of next year - you'll have to try and survive without me ;)

Anyway, my reason for posting here is two fold. First, to let you guys know I'm away and wish ALFA the best of luck for the rest of the year. Secondly, and more importantly (as wishing someone luck never helps much) is to see how many people I can talk into meeting up for lunch/dinner/drinks/a tour around your city/whatever.

From May 1st, to August 18th (look! I am even learning to write dates in US format!) I'll be in NC, staying in coast by Asheville (for those who know where that is).

After that, my plans are a bit more open. At the moment thinking of heading north to New York and Washington DC for maybe ten or so days, then further up the coast a bit, maybe crossing over to Canada for a short bit, if I've got time.

Then early september, diving across the country (not sure what route yet), to the Pacific Coast. Want to try and do the length of the pacific coast, from Washington right down to LA, where I fly out at the end of September.

But like I said, my plans are flexable and will probably change a bit between now and then (influenced a bit by where people are). Would be great to meet up with as many ALFAians as possible on the way. So if you're along that route (or anywhere, for that matter - even if that anywhere is the middle of no where (in the USA)) and want to meet up at some stage, feel free to give a yell! Either below, PM, or email (rotkus@gmail.com).

Will have limited internet access over there (yay for internet cafes), and am planning on buying a cellphone while I'm there, so should be able to keep in contact and update my plans when they become more solid.

Already met Bool, indio, Swift, AL, Lou, Shining Hand Monk, Joos and Thangs, after two years worth of Aussie ALFA Cons. Hopefully I'm not forgetting anyone. Want to double that list by the time I get back home next year! :P

Roktu, I'm in MD, just outside the DC area by about 45 min. If you're dropping by this fall, I can show you around the DC area.

If all goes well, will be in Hawaii by the time you make the west coast leg. You should go there.

Also most coffee shops have free wireless, if you bring a laptop.

Unfortunate that you'll be coming through in September since I'll be at school, but if you want to see the greatest air museum in the world (and it's on a Saturday) we might be able to manage. You should go anyway though, if you're taking I-70 (which you probably will be).

You expected me to read that thing? There were not nearly enough pictures!

And what are you doing posting here, Nick? Aren't you meant to be in Asia?

Jayde : Would love to go to Hawaii at some stage. Unfortunately don't think I'll have enough time/money this year so might have to wait 'til another time.

Nekulor : Thanks for the offer! :) Really looking foward to seeing central DC - probably top on my list of things to do (sad, isn't it?).

If you'll be ending your trip in LA, and flying out of LAX, you are in my neck of the woods. If I can manage it, I'd definitely set something up.

Don't know what my plans will be in September, of course heh, but I'll put in some Rotku time.

As a slight aside, what's new years like in LA? Got a stop over for a day or so in LA on the way back home, after Costa Rica, which happens to be on New Years eve.

*sigh* Kids these days... It might give you some ideas of what to get up to. It even included my "why Amtrak is better than Greyhound" spiel and with examples! Just do't come crying to me when you make the same mistakes I did.

And they do have the internet here in Asia, you know. Even here in Hanoi, where it's an adventure just attempting to cross the street (It's amazing that I've only been hit by one motorbike so far). It's even free in my hotel!
