AMD or Intel

So... what's your preference?

FINALLY, yes finally, I'm in the market for a computer ( just as I plan to leave Madison as well, and live even farther north)... But I'm having a hard time deciding between the two...

Which one?

Argh!

better: intel
cheaper: amd

intel is better a little clock-for-clock and because it will overclock a lot with ease. If you don't overclock...well then maybe you wouldn't care about that so much.

Intel has, unfortunately, pulled ahead in the race and is going to stay there for the forseeable future. However modern CPUs are so powerful that it really doesn't matter all that much, plus for most games the GPU is much more important. Exceptions would be Supreme Commander and uh... Supreme Commander. Intel's more powerful, AMD is significantly cheaper. Just depends what direction you want to go.

Is AMD sufficiently cheaper that you could by a better spec chip than the equivalently priced Intel?

If so, the Intel choice would only appear to be worth it if you have the budget to totally max out the spec on your new machine.

(And I suspect if you want to get the best bang for your buck, maxing out the graphics card would be a better investment thatn maxing out the processor)

For most people I would recommend an intel CPU/Mobo with nVidia GPU. However, since you are such a winging emo goth, I am going to recommend you going with AMD in combination with an Ati GPU, so you won't ever have problems finding something to winge, bitch and moan about. :P

Seriously though, if you want help speccing up a new machine, we need to know your budget and what its going to be used for, ie only gaming, work and gaming or mostly work and only a little gaming etc.

not really. The AMD option is more about just shaving a few bucks off, period.

and you are right, the graphics is the place to put the money if its going to be a gaming rig. If going AMD can mean a better graphics card, then it could be a reasonable choice. Like Joos says though, need a budget and intended purpose before I could offer clearer advice.

Intel it is then. As for budget, I'm being realistic... I'm not going quad-core, with 1.5 TB of RAM in RAID configuration, nor am I going to start out with dual 8800's. Just something I can atleast play around with in the big kid's pool, and upgrade when I get around to it. I've decidedly dropped the idea of having an UBER computer.

Thanks for the replies!

*edit* On a side-note, just for gaming and media. :P Also, I have everything all picked out, it was just the mo-bo and processor that I was unsure on.
