by Thangorn
We need to debunk this rubbish..

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/ ... _all_time/

so I propose an ALFA wide poll..

Here's how it will work..

Rank your top 10 in order of greatest to not-as-great-as-the-greatest-but -still-pretty-great.

Once we have enough members who've posted their list, I shall compile the results and present the REAL list of great guitarists from 1-100..

I need time to compile mine but .. Ladies and Gentlemens.. START YOUR ENGINES....

PS. If you post primarily bass players, you suck as these will go in anotehr poll.. KTHXBYEBBQSAUCE

"Greatest" as in most influential and pioneering? Or who we find most impressive and enjoyable to listen to?

Whatever greatness means to you Vael..

1. Carlos Santana
All round good guy and pulls off amazing riff work on everything he touches

2. Tony Iommi
Lose two fingers and see how well you still play guitar

3. Trey Spruance - Secret Chiefs 3, Mr Bungle, etc.
The most eclectic and brilliant guitarist/multi-instrumentalist around

4. Kirk Hammett - Metallica
I grew up on a steady diet of Metallica

5. Eric Clapton
What can I say? Pure gold especially Cream

6. Frank Zappa
Mind-blowing riff-work. Love Peaches En Regalia.

7. Robert Fripp - King Crimson
Awesome. Love Three of a Perfect Pair and Frame by Frame.

8. Jimmy Page
I mean jesus, I can you go wrong here..

9. Buckethead
I think he's a bit of a wanker but boy the guy can play guitar

10. Kim Thayil - Soundgarden
Picked up Tony Iommi left off and took it all to brand new level.. masterful

[edit: 16/11/07] Bah.. I cant knock any of them down. An honourable mention which will not be included in this poll is Buzz Osbourne from The Melvins.

[edit 2: 16/11/07] I totally forgot JIMMY PAGE!! WTF!! Tom Morello is hereby relegated to honourable mention status.

6. Tony Iommi - the godfather of heavy metal riffs

7. The Edge - I just love his riffs from the Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree/Achtung Baby albums

Where is Yngvie Malmsteen? Marty friedman? Zakk Wylde? That list is so caught up in old fart-rock it makes me angry. And Jimmi Hendrix as no 1? Aright, he was good, but not that good.

while that list is closer to the mark Joos, there's still some problems. I dont see Buckethead or Trey Spruance on there anywhere and thats a travesty.. Vernon Reid, Satch and Robert Fripp should be rated much higher for their ground breaking guitar work.

Dave Mustaine, Head or Munky shouldn't be on that list either IMO..

Yea, I agree with you. I think both Mr Mustaine and Hetfield and a few other double acts slipped in on the list since they are in a duo guitar configuration band. I also don't see the point of putting Korn on that list since they are obviously not a guitar hero kinda band.

Now, I will be perfectly honest and tell you I have no clue who buckethead or trey spruance is, but I'll have a look around.

Well, my quicly formed preferite list. Hard to put these guys in any definite order:

1 ) Randy Rhoades (Childhood idols never really die)
2 ) Carlos Santana ( Awesome flexibility)
3 ) Dimebag Darrell (Just awesome)
4 ) Zakk Wylde ( A bit stiff, but certainly earns a guitar hero status)
5 ) Richie Blackmore ( A true legend)
6 ) Tony Iommi (Another true legend)
7 ) Jimmy Page ( Legend as well, but I like the music of two above more)
8 ) Yngwie Malmsteen (Great player, but a bit too pop for my tastes)
9 ) Joe Satriani( Another really Great player)
10 ) Jeff Waters (Awesome riffmachine and bandleader, but neverever get him making lyrics or composing whole songs...it hurts)

Reason Steve Vai isn´t in the top 10 list of mine is that IMO he is an awesome guitar player, but pretty much just that. A player. He can play a solo for hours, but who the hell has endurance to listen that when his composing skills are nada.

Well said. Vai and Satriani are both like that in many ways. Although Satch has written some decent tunes, his soloing is overkill. "Alright! We get it! You can play!" :P

I would still recommend Vai's Passion & Warfare album as a fine work of progressive metal.

Jimmy Page is a damn fine lead guitarist, but there are easily 10 musicians of his caliber.

THIS is Trey Spruance my good fellow and that is Secret Cheifs 3, one of my favourite bands of all time.

THIS is Buckethead. A sick twisted individual who got kicked out of Guns 'n Roses for erratic behaviour and for refusing to play without the chicken bucket and mask. He's kind of like a serial killer with a guitar.

Yea, I checked out one piece of Buckethead on youtube, and was mightily impressed, so I've listened to a lot today already.

However, I am really interested in the experimental type of music that you posted for Trey, but I wouldn't put him on the top 100 for that. The composition was sure enough very cool, but it didn't help showing him off as a guitar god, at least not for me.
