Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 726MB

is $400 cheaper than

Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra 726MB

is the ultra that much more awesome?

No. You can overclock the 8800gtx yourself and get the same performance. Not sure the 8800gtx itself is worth the money...you can get damn near the same performance with the new 8800GT, and those are at the high introductory price of $300.

Ya, the new GFX8800GT is currently the sweet spot when it comes to price/performance.

Don't waste your money on the Ultra, the GTX or GT are fine. Also, I'm not currently up to date on the offerings, but in the past the brand name sometimes made a difference within the same model. It's been about 4-5 mos. since I've even looked at the gfx card market so hopefully someone else can help you with specifics.

I just saw your post about gaming notebooks and desktop PC. Is this for a desktop or notebook? Either way, the GTX is generally the go to card for nvidia, and you'll probably appreciate the difference over a GT. The Ultra is still probably not worth it though. Hrm, maybe I'll go look up some recent info...

Nate, your intel is obviously very dated. The GT8800 is nVidias latest and greatest on a 65nm die and is the next core after the current crop of 8X00. It is a bit confusing I know, but the 8800GT is now byfar the best graphics card out there with speeds up, if not better than the GTS at most points. I would even go so far as to say, you are better off buying two 8800GT for SLI rather than getting one GTX!

If you want razor sharp, make sure it's DDR3 compatable. I understand it's the newest (and most costly) chipset.

As someone who can actually dance, I was never really good at DDR, kind of like how people who can really play guitar tend not to be as good at Guitar Hero (the front man always beats the lead guitarist on rock band buses)...

Well, I think price is also a factor for him to some degree. If the only game he plays is NWN2 and he only wants one card the GTX is still probably the best option for him right?

(Assuming a desktop card here, I'm not up to speed on notebook cards ATM)

If the new GTs have a smaller die than the GTX and they're cheaper than that seems to be the better option like you say though.

GTX will give a little better performance, but not nearly enough to justify its extra cost. A GT will run nwn2 splendidly as long as one gets the 512MB version. The only downside to the GT is the little bitty cooler they stuck on it to make it single-slot. There are reports of it overheating in cases with weak airflow, or if for some reason the fan on the card gets set too low (easily fixable with nTune). The GTX has the best stock cooler I've ever seen on a video card.
