Amazingly, not only did this guy survive the chair-leg entering his eye-socket and going down his neck - he didn't even lose the eye!

That's nothing compared to good old
Phineas Gage, who had a five-foot iron rod blown through his skull:
He survived too (amazingly, considering this was the 19th century), although he became a bit of a psychopath following the damage to his frontal lobe. Very famous case in neurology.

He was working setting an iron rod to a hole drilled into rock, which also contained gunpowder. The rod struck a spark, the powder went off, the rod passed cleanly through his skull above his right eye. He went from mild mannerd nice-guy, to crazy.
Nothing vital was hit, but I just hope they passed out. Looks like major reconstructive surgery to me.
