AMsterdam ---what area to stay

So I've heard a couple differing opinions and I wanted to poll some of you Euro folk who might live near/in Amsterdam.
What neighborhood would be best for staying a long weekend in Amsterdam.
I'll be with my GF. We like places of historical interest, good eating and stylish drinking, and the occasional museum.
SOme have said to stay in the central city while others out in the museum district and others in the "canal belt".
Ideas?

The canal belt is pretty much the city centre, and most museums are in there or nearby. Although if you can find a good and/or cheap place near a railway or underground station, that should do nicely too. All major tourist attractions are easily reached by public transport.
Once you get the hang of the odd way you have to pay for it, anyway.

I've stayed at this place whenever I've gone to Amsterdam:

It's a 10-15 min walk from the hotel to the Sloterdijk train station, which is one stop from Amsterdam Centraal Station in the middle of downtown. It's less than 5 mins off the highway, so it's easy to find and you're not in the city streets finding your way. Nothing fancy, but a good, clean hotel that isn't too expensive.

Didn't like Amsterdam. However, one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at in my entire life (top 3, easy) was the Schiphol A4 hotel. Only problem is that it's not actually in Amsterdam. You have to catch their bus from the hotel to the airport and then the train to Amsterdam.

The Ibis Hotel chain is quite good, as far as 3-3.5 star hotels can get anyway, and reasonably priced too. Just avoid the Red Lights district (too noisy) and you should be fine.

And don't make the same mistake I did! Get stoned at the end of the day, not the start!

Because the missus tends to get a bit upset if you ruin her cultural experience by being too stoned to stand up, let alone go into the museums and stuff.
The locals frown on stoned tourists during the daytime too, apparently.

Where to stay?
The red light district - with all the hookers.

Being too stoned to get it up back at the hotel probably didn't help much either...

make sure to go to the umm "live shows" also. They are apparently a cultural experience of a sort.
