Day 1, to the world press: "If there's a leak out of my administration, I wanna know who it is. If the person has violated law, that person will be taken care of." -- King George ....

yes George.... "Taken care of," indeed.

BREAKING: Bush Commutes Libby Sentence

President Bush has spared Scooter Libby from a 2½-year prison term, issuing an order that commutes his sentence, the AP reports. Libby will never have to go to jail, but his felony conviction will stand, and he will still serve two years probation and owe $250,000 in fines.

UPDATE II: From Bush’s statement today:

I respect the jury’s verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.

My decision to commute his prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged. His wife and young children have also suffered immensely. He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect. The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting.

The Constitution gives the President the power of clemency to be used when he deems it to be warranted. It is my judgment that a commutation of the prison term in Mr. Libby’s case is an appropriate exercise of this power.

That's right..... he actually said he "respects the juy's decision"...

I was actually expecting a full pardon. Still, it's all but. At this point in his presidency, he really isn't concerned with backlash, as he's gotten as low as he can get. He could probably rape his dog on the front lawn and still keep his 28% of totally screwed up Americans behind him.

Chris Matthews wrote:Matthews thinks this decision wasn’t exactly a proud moment for the White House. “If the president were proud of his decision (and that’s his decision and his right to make it), he would have held something at the Rose Garden. He would have said it in person and not issued a statement on paper. He wouldn’t have done it on a 4th of July holiday period with everyone out of town. He would have done it with some flourish and some pride.”

But for the Hardball host, the misinformation on the case for war – and that legacy – lives on. “The 25 to 30 percent of the country who believe in the president’s performance are largely conservatives, and they believe in the war. It’s frightening that 40 percent still think that Iraq attacked us on 9/11. Twenty percent of the country still believes there were weapons of mass destruction discovered by our military forces when they went into Iraq."

"The misinformation in this country remains after all these years -- because of the propaganda before we went to war. The results are still in effect. We’re still under a misunderstanding of the nature of why we went to war. That’s the tragedy here.”

Well, the administration already lost the base (including myself) so its not like Bush has anything else to lose.

Well he didnt give him a full pardon although that may indeed happen before Bush gets out of office. What i find ironic is how you liberal turd burglers are all up in arms, but no one mentions the 400+ pardons Clinton gave out during his terms in office. He gave out pardons to his own brother for illegal drug sales, he gave out pardons for a personal family friend of his that was in deep shit with the government for all kinds of things. This guy, Ricks, or whatever his name was even left the US so he could avoid getting put in jail. He also gave up his US citizenship. Clinton pardoned him just to get him to contribute to his campaign.

There were tons of people Clinton pardoned for money laundering, drug sales, etc, but we never here anything about that do we? Sandy Burger should have had his ass put in jail for stuffing secret documents in his clothes as he left, but he also didnt spend any jail time. I dont want to hear how this was so unfair or wrong. Its politics. Libby still is a criminal and will have that on his record for all time. He still has to pay the fines and do the probation so he didnt get off scot free.

Its just funny to hear folks laughing about this when Clinton did so much worse. Hell, its even funnier to watch Hilary go apeshit about it in her interviews and sound bites when her and her husband were ten times worse that Bush ever was with Presidental pardons.

True, clinton pardoned people who weren't even government employees and they were convicted on drug charges.

Libby got a bit too harsh sentence, IMO, but I still think pardoning him was a bad political play.
