Loulabelle and Acadius Lost on the radio!

Post by AcadiusLost »

As some of you are aware, I've been doing a weekly radio music broadcast wednesday nights for years now- the format is dark electronic / industrial / synthpop / Gothic / etc. Lou joins me for the yearly fundraiser show, of which this will be the last one for us.

We'll be on from 6-8 PM Pacific time [GMT -7 currently] tomorrow night (wednesday), all hopped up on red bull and pop-rocks, potentially getting a body piercing live on air if we make our target goal (likely $1000 for the 2-hours). I'd encourage you all to tune in for a bit wednesday and see if we sell you on supporting the radio station.

What you might not be aware of, is that the UC Davis campus station, KDVS 90.3 FM, is a pretty amazing resource- it's the most powerful freeform, noncommercial, student-run radio station on the west coast- bringing underrepresented artists in a maddening variety of genres to the airwaves, organizing concerts and festivals, hosting "Live in Studio A" performances weekly, producing our own news broadcasts, as well as live public affairs programs like "This Week in Science", "Radio Parallax", and more- where guests from all over the country are hosted in a talk format to discuss poignant issues. In addition to the radio broadcast, KDVS simulcasts in mp3, realaudio, and ogg-vorbis- as well as archiving all it's programming for any-time listening with online playlists in real-time. All the DJs are volunteers, and pick their own playlists and genres. KDVS raises 2/3rds of it's operating budget during just one week a year- last year it made it's goal of $65,000- this year the target is $70,000 by sunday night.

DJs pull all kinds of crazy on-air stunts to help bring in the (tax-deductible) donations- from eating worms, to being set on fire, writing poems or songs in honor of donors, getting their heads shaved, etc. It's entertaining radio, and a pretty crazy contrast to the droll pledge drives you may be accustomed to from NPR or PBS. Donations are also rewarded by "Premiums"- often packages of 3-5 CDs at the basic level of $25 for students or $40 for community members. At higher levels of support, donors can get their own hour of KDVS airtime to play the music they love- with our staff to help work the buttons and knobs. Alternatively, 4 hours of studio production time is on offer for anyone with a band trying to get a demo made. Or, you can get the KDVS mobile DJ unit to play a party, all around the $100 level. There are also a bunch of T-shirt designs and colors at the basic donation level.

The frequency is 90.3 FM, though few of you are local enough to be able to tune it in without the magic of webcasting. The website is http://www.kdvs.org - you can browse the various premium gifts available at the different pledge levels to see what's still available, and follow our progress to our goal as the week unfolds.

If any of you find yourselves compelled to donate, there is a tollfree number (works from all over the US), as well as full online pledging if you're overseas.

[edit: one of my cut & pastes didn't make sense]
[edit: title to reflect the fact that the show is already over]

4 hours to go till the show, fundraiser has been going well so far this week! Almost up to $24,500 since monday morning. Plenty of premiums still available, including the oh-so-stylish "KDVASS" underwear at the modest $25 donation level. This year you can even choose size and color for them, which is an improvement over last year.

If you feel compelled to pledge online, feel free to tick "yes" on the "are you a UC Davis student" box- you'll get access to all the music premiums for $25 instead of $40.

all the KDVS broadcast streams are linked here: http://www.kdvs.org/streams.cfm

Thanks to everyone who called in to the show! We blew away our all-time record from 2 years ago, and surpassed all other music shows this week.

Total for the 2 hours: $1740.00 !

If anyone wants to hear it this week, the archives can be found here:

http://www.kdvs.org/showme.cfm?show=5&t ... back=_grid

The show starts about 2:16 into that archive, as the time isn't quite synched up to the station clock.
