Yeah, I'm planning on doing most of the main quest right up to just before the ending and then doing all my exploring then. Main reason being that I don't really want to accidentally wander into a place that's otherwise a quest location until I'm going there for the quest itself. I figure following the main quest will take me to most of the hubs where I can pick up side quests.
I'm considering starting another game with a bad karma character in the mean time, which is what I was planning on doing once I finish my good karma game... but I think I'll just go on with Far Cry 2, which is also a decent game.
Current PCs:
NWN1: Soppi Widenbottle, High Priestess of Yondalla.
NWN2: Gruuhilda, Tree Hugging Half-Orc
I can't build a PC for shit, but the game is involving. The wasteland feel is spot on. I'm not feeling the magic of a story that sucks me in, but I can live with that. Dialog is very binary...some real jewels, but a lot of tedious stuff. The action is interesting, and exploring buildings is done well. This is a no-regrets purchase for me.
Built: TSM (nwn2) Shining Scroll and Map House (proof anyone can build!)

Which means all three of the quests, including the main quest, I'm in the middle of can't be continued.
I don't want to wander around the Wasteland randomly until after I've done most/all of the main quest... which means I'm stuck. I guess I'll go back to Far Cry 2 until Bethesda can be bothered fixing it. Which will probably take a while given Bethesda's track record.
Dunno how much this project fixes Fallout2, but even getting it work easily with XP/vista would be good in my books and if it fixes some stuff more than great. Think I´ll try it after playing Fallout3 through.
Picked up the game and am feeling so so about it. Thought the graphics could have been better (walking animations are a joke) but I like the genre. I'm exploring Megaton and the area close by and figured I'd ask for some tips and suggestions on Stats & Perks. VATS is cool but I need to remap the V key to something I can click on faster.

SPECIAL is a pretty forgiving system. You'll want repair high, as well as whichever gun skill you want to use. Lockpick, science, and speech are all valuable to give you more options. The perks that give additional XP are completely useless, you'll easily hit the level cap without them. The extra skill point ones are fine though, skill points are limited. I would suggest an IN 8 or 9 to help maximize your skill points. Barter is the only semi-useless skill, I wouldn't put anything into it.

Go for a high int to get those extra skill points. Don't start any stat at 10, as there are bobbleheads around the world that give a 1 point boost to each of the stats. There's also a quest that gives you a 1 point boost to either perception or strength. I wouldn't waste any perks on the ones that give you extra XP or levels because the level cap is on 20 and you'll hit that before you finish the game anyway, plus there seems to be a bit of auto levelling. I'm going for all 10 stat boost perks. Otherwise, just go for the ones based on how you play. I've got all 3 Gun Nuts and Toughness. Dunno what else I'll get. Probably skill boost perks, maybe the cyborg one. I'll leave the RP perks for another game.

Argh, I had the Bethesda tm psionic "the world knows what you do" moment... Playing stalker kinda guy, been stealing stuff when no one sees and decided to assasinate certain guys (two) where no one sees. Carefully planned stuff, hiding and stalking. No witnesses... Result: Karma evil, which doesn´t bother me in itself, but the bounty hunters right next area telling me someone put a bounty on my head for being too evul did crack me up and not in a positive way....
Psionic guards/world were fixed by patch in Oblivion. Made by community, not Bethesda. I so hope someone feels interested enough to do the same with this game. Otherwise it´s just a mockery of what a Fallout was.
While I´m still interested and enthusiastic about this game ( and for the record I liked Oblivion& Morrowind both, after community made patches) I´m losing hope Fallout3 will live to the legacy of previous Fallout games.
(Taking back some of my words from earlier post. Initial wonder has faded.)
Right now I feel it´s an ok FPS. Forget the interactive world.
As for skills/perks I´d go for high skills with small guns/repair and explosives. Spare points to lockpick/science/speech. At least for initial game. Grenades with enough points in explosives almost work as big guns against those tough bastards and V.A.T.S. is hardly useful outside small guns.

Yeah that is about the only facet of the game that is really getting on my nerves. Sure, if someone sees a theft/murder karma should go down, but if nobody sees, how do they know its you?
Its especially annoying when your asked to kill someone. The killing doesn't get a karma change, but if you pick up the dudes pack of cigarettes off the table, your suddenly an evil bastard.
I made the mistake of patching the game and had to reinstall to stop all the crashes it generated. After a reboot the damn game wouldn't even load anymore. The movement & combat animations are a joke really looking like something you'd see in a 5 year old game. The graphics in general are poorly done as well for such a new game. I would understand if Multiplayer was included somehow but as a single player game I just don't get it after such a long time in development. By comparison, anyone see the graphics for COD: World at War?? Jebus.
Btw, better to throw points into Big Guns or Explosives??

First time playing a Bethesda game, eh? It's sad that these are the best character models to date for the games they've made.
