If ME3 is a movie-game, PS:T is a book-game. Books are usually better than movies and this is no exception. I agree the plot of ME3 could've been better. They got close to greatness and fell short...

The series, especially the first game, felt like the designers were partially trying to make a modern and mature Star Control 2 but didn't manage to overshadow the older game (I think I lied earlier; my favorite games of all time are numerous, and include SC2 as well as X-COM). ME made you make hard decisions, and plenty of them. Then in the end, none of those decisions matter unless you really sucked. SC2 was similar in many respects, but those decisions affected how difficult the final battle would be, as well as the ending narrative. SC2 was also moar awesome because it had a Gith/Illithid thing going on.

Congratulations, you've just categorized all video games. What is your favorite game, connoisseur Jern?

Papers, Please has had a decent whack of player time recently. A game about checking papers at a border crossing that can be utterly depressing at times and yet it seems to keep gameplay interesting.

There are plenty of video games that are fun that aren't button mashers so I don't know where you're trying to go Ronan. Yes I am quite aware that in order to beat the video game is to press buttons. I was talking more about quick time events which devolve into "we, the developers, couldn't find a way to make our gameplay exciting and fun, so instead we'll create an illusion that the player is skillful at the video game and as a result, having fun".

As for my favorite video game I dunno, probably Dark Souls, Hotline Miami. Something fun.

I am also partial to Border Patrol : The Game.

Oh yes, QTEs are terrible. Mostly because they pop up while you're trying to sip a beer/coke and watch a cut-scene. Instead you scramble to put your drink down, spill it everywhere, and DIE. Horrible, horrible inventions.

Demon Souls was cool but I found it kind of easy, despite many claims to the contrary. Dark Souls is kinda crappy on a PC so I haven't played it much.

It has aged pretty badly just like the other Inifinity Engine game. I still love them, but I can totally see how someone trying them for the first time, even someone with good* taste in games, could have trouble getting into them.

*By good I mean similar taste to my own. You know....subjectivity.

No idea. When I played it it was only 6 or so years old, but still looked like crap. I definitely had to force myself to play through the first bits (maybe until I got Annah?) until I got used to the graphics. Nowadays it must look way worse, but I find I can usually get used to old games with crappy graphics once I've spent enough time in them. I guess Infinity Engine is a bit worse than "crappy" these days though.

Fortunately as we get closer and closer to photo-realistic graphics, newer games don't look so much better than their predecessors. Today's classics should age much better than 1999's, though most modern RPGs seem aimed at a much broader (read: dumber) market and so are a lot less complex than older games. Just look at how much simpler ME3 was than ME2 and especially ME1.

Edit: There's always Knights of the Old Republic, as classic RPGs go. Not as good as PS:T but it doesn't look like something a dog threw up either. And Dues Ex, which has RPG-y elements.

I am excited for Rome 2: Total War where I will send screaming Gauls down into the Po Valley to burn and pillage and conquer.

Over and out.

No it isn't. In conjunction with "gentleman's club", it's code for "socially unacceptable and unspeakable debauchery". Let your mind fly free.

Now they use that same euphemism in the EU too Joos? I thought that was a particular Americanism, unless shoving currency in a g-string is considered gentleman's behavior over there :P

I play a shitload of Civilization 5 these days (since the latest expansion came out)
pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.
