Re: Superbowl XLVI
It shouldn't take 4 hours to play 1 hour of football. It just shouldn't.
I used to watch it back when I was a kid, but then, like I-KP, the constant commercials drove me up the wall. Then I started to properly learn the rules and when I realized they have 5 attempts to cover 10 yards, I decided it was a bit of a joke. Rugby League gives you 5 shots to cover the entire fields.
Note: I don't actually enjoy Rugby League.

It's Rugby Union for me. This year's Six Nations is shaping up to be a good one among the top three sides: Wales are looking really big and strong; Ireland always look nifty on the ball; France haven't had chance to demonstrate much form yet, but you can be assured it's there; England is building a team for the future, so they're not going to win with the current inexperienced side this year or even the next; Scotland have technical and imaginative play that's almost always let down by hot-headedness; and Italy have improved so much in the last ten years that they're no longer the auto-write-off that they used to be.Swift wrote:It shouldn't take 4 hours to play 1 hour of football. 80 minutes of full-on Rugby played out in, what, 95 minutes from the first whistle. The only time they stop is when someone breaks something or gets knocked out, and even then sometimes the game carries on around them! Now that's a tough sport.

Re: Superbowl XLVI
Using NFL GamePass you can see Fooball games in roughly 30 minutes of pure action (no ad breaks, no huddles...).
Okay it costs an arm (around €250 for the season and the playoffs) but it's worth it if you compare to the costs of sports network that relay the NFL around here.
I love Rugby as well but the refs are way too bad and there are no ref contests which is a shame in some situations.
For example, on yesterday Wales/Scotland match, near the end, the ref (a french guy btw) refused a try due to a forward pass that didn't exist on the replay. Ok Scotland scored a few minutes later and it wouldn't have changed the match anyway but still...
And don't talk about soccer. Just watch a match with either Brasilians or Portugueses and you'll see fouls whistled after players fall without any contact whatsoever. I have a Portuguese friend that stopped watching matches at home because of that.
For me NFL > Rugby > Soccer.
I'd really like to see AFL (Aussies Rules not Arena Football League) but I don't think you can watch it in France.
Edit: apparently there might be a way but it would cost me much more AFAIK.
Oh and it's not 5 attempts for 10 yards it's 4

Yes, I'm not sure why he didn't go to the TV ref for varification on that one but the man on the field has ultimate veto be that rightly or wrongly - someone has to be. It was an on the spot DM call, something that we're all used to by now. We probably won't be seeing him again any time soon tho, esp. for a Scotland game.Hialmar wrote:For example, on yesterday Wales/Scotland match, near the end, the ref (a french guy btw) refused a try due to a forward pass that didn't exist on the replay. Re: Superbowl XLVI
If Scotland's coach would have had the opportunity to challenge him it would have allowed the team to score earlier...

DM: "Your PC is dead."
Player: "No, he isn't. He reflex saved for half damage. He's got 15 HP's. See... he's walking about now picking up loot."
DM: "Oh!...very sorry, but we don't have instant replay enabled"..*hits kill button*
Player: "Well snap!...OK, he's dead now. But that's alright, we all make mistakes
"
DM: "Yes...sorry about that, I confused your PC with the goblin. Better luck next time, mate"

Way to line up the straw men.
Re: Superbowl XLVI
4 attempts, not 5, and covering that 10 yards is more difficult in football. I agree the constant stoppage - especially the advert breaks - are very annoying, but the game itself is much more a chess match than a rugby or soccer (futbol) match.Swift wrote:It shouldn't take 4 hours to play 1 hour of football. If that's what you are after, why not watch chess instead?

Re: Superbowl XLVI
People dont beat the ever living piss out of each other in chess. I watched some program on the collisions in a football game once. A linebacker colliding with a blocking fullback coming out of the backfield has the force of something like 2 mid-sized cars colliding at 20 mph. Something like that, I was pretty amazed at whatever it was.
Anyway, yeah, chess is an individual game of the mind; fusball is a team sport involving much mind power and a whole lot of kickin' rear.

They're all football, be it soccer, gridiron or even (arguably) rugby.

How is this topic more interesting than the Iron Sky topic?
pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.
