Exactly. And of course, Auckland isn't the sort of place you probably want to go biking around.

Eh, maybe. I've had the same bike for upwards of six years, and the maintenance has been minimal--something like $5/year, averaged.

Not really a concern, though the cost of a new bike could be.

Heh, try doing a bit of mountain biking and you'll see the maintainace cost sky rocket

Depends what you mean by mountain biking, I suppose. I did a dirt trail in the hills pretty regularly for a year or two, and that didn't make my costs go up.
