They have to do both. Sound policies get a nod from those in the know and their publications, populism and soundbites satisfy the other 98% of voters.

Right now Obama is coasting on his prior popularity while trying to satisfy the policy critics. The problem is, his policy critics will never be satisfied, he's talking to a wall. In the meantime, Palin has all cameras aimed at her. This is Rove at his best, torpedoing the substance with a gimmick. Sarah Barracuda indeed. Republicans may suck at governing, but they are masters of campaigning.

It still may backfire though. In this election, the pundits all seem to agree the outcome will be decided by the independent middle. Palin is not the way to woo the moderate vote. It may actually alienate them despite McCain's moderation. We'll find out in two months.

Thinking on this more, I now see the path to Democratic defeat.

The GOP has incorporated its fringe attack machine into its system. The Democrats treat their fringe attackers like outsiders, trying to distance themselves from elements within their own party. There is a reason the Republicans never apologize for the outrageous comments of Coulter or Limbaugh or others. First, they motivate the base, and therefore you want them on your side. Second, some of the zingers are worth repeating yourself. Third, apologizing for them admits they are wrong, *and* sends a message that you can't control elements within your own party, showing that you are disorganized and weak.

Have you ever heard a Republican apologize for or denounce right wing attacks? Of course not. They know better. Now, Obama is going out of his way to praise McCain and Palin and talk about what great people they are to distance himself from left wing attacks. It's a bad move. It demotivates the base, admits to wrongdoing within his own party, and shows that he's weak and disorganized. Plus, now he has on kids gloves when it comes to Palin, who is an unrepentant zealot.

You don't face the Rovian attack machine by capitulating. This is the modern Nazi party. Obama was on a brilliant message before the RNC, now he's floundering. If he doesn't get back on message soon and stop apologizing for his own party, he's finished. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Then we'll have four more years of misery, start a war with Iran, and the world will ask why the US subjected itself to such horrid policies again.

TV news does not (for the most part; there are exceptions out there) spend time on detailed policies, they play a couple soundbites and have some people you've never heard of yell at each other for a bit over the implications of said sound bites. Also people don't pay enough attention to absorb complex policy information.

The Kerry comparison is a little off since Kerry wasn't much of a candidate, had no oratory skill and the personality of a wet cardboard box, but there is truth in it. Kerry was constantly made fun of for being intellectual, and while it may not have cost him the election, it certainly didn't help. People already accuse Obama of snobbery for his intellectualism. When you consider the sources of the accusations it becomes quite ridiculous (my favorite being the heiress to the Rothschild fortune calling him elitist from her 3,200 acre estate), but those things are much more easily digestible than nuanced policy descriptions.
No, he's a snob for is accusation that people cling to guns and religion out of fear. I guess he was a mighty fearful fellow to cling to Rev Wright all those years then suddenly 'abandoned' him to prop up his public image, that was fueled by fear as well, fear of public opinion. Hail Obama!

He's a snob for his assumptions. He is a snob because he thinks he knows it all, he things he can please everyone and HE thinks that HE is bipartisan when HE IS IN FACT FAR LEFT AND AMBIGOUS IN HIS VOTING RECORD.

All the upturned nose portraits of Obama? A propaganda campaign. Democratic-socialism. Charismatic dictatorship.

Lies perpetuated by the far left. I guess they didn't have time to watch the RNC in full. . . After all 300 million in america, not everyone saw it. . . Time to destroy & lie.

Truth: McCain asks of everyone to go out and do their best, to be charitable, to help others, to teach, to support your community. He only bashed Obama's service, which is fine. Others are far more charitable than Obama has ever been and never even bothered with the spotlight.

Truth: The attacks were geared toward Obama and all demcrats that run for public office USE civil service, i.e. community service, as a stepping stone to launch political careers. Selfish, but they do help people, at least you can give them that. Besides, good for public image, Obama be thy name. Amen.

All of this, including, some of everyone's rhetoric here, brings me back to what I truly believe. . .

It's about utter control of government. A Ruling ideology of democratic-socialism and a minimalization and dissemination of lies to trivialize the republican party, libertarian branches, and many independants who just don't give a shit about politics, who would rather live their own lives and be left well the fuck alone; all this is aided and spread by the media.

I guess its not enough that republicans, too, enjoy music.
