If you are being a tourist it is expensive but everything except telecommunications/internet is pretty similar to what I'd spend in Brisbane. Getting paid mexican pesos.. I mean NZ$ is pretty hard to live with thoughNickD wrote:You couldn't have picked a much more expensive one to live in either!
Telecommunications and internet are farking ridiculous prices!! Is it like this everywhar in NZ?

That's what I mean.. they are the best deals in town.. not that Brisbane is much better but I least my shit broadband was uncapped and unthrottled..
Doesn't look I'll be hosting NWN2 any time soon with those, and with what I need to run my pnp campaign on fantasy grounds its going to eat that 6Gb plan up!
also add to that plan the $45/month I'll be paying in phone line rental and insurances and there is also an additional fee for broadband line rental or something too..

I'll let you know Joos. At this stage, it is an extension of the Old School Faerun (1362-3 DR), long term pnp game I'd been running in Brisbane thats been running for nearly 2 years. I have 5 active players which is about all for me. Everyone started at 1st level and now they are all at around 6th-7th..

The best deal I've been able to get with internet is through the wireless provider, Woosh, although I don't think they'll have service down your side of the country. Was paying about $20/month for 1gb, then they cap the speed down to dialup with unlimited useage. However, I worked out that so long as I don't disconnect the internet, after hitting 1gb, it stays at the broadband speed. That worked well, unless there was a powercut. Was a few years ago though (been out of range these past two), so they might have caught on to it.

Unfortunately, Telecom owns all the wires, so it's been crap for a long time due to the monopoly. The government have been pushing for improvements and introduced a couple of measures, but improvements have been coming very slowly.
I'd go for Pro if it wasn't for the 2c/MB after 15MB (and the excessive expense). The plan I'm on, Go Large, on paper appeared to be the perfect plan for me. Unlimited download limit, "as fast as your modem will go" download speeds, with a cap on upload speeds. It worked brilliant for about 2 weeks, then Telecom changed it to "as fast as your modem will go, depending on how many other people are using Go Large in your area at the same time"... which in real terms, is piss poor most of the time. Maybe only 2 to 4 times better than dial up. They dropped the plan and reimbursed the first few months, but I stayed on it because I often download more than 15GB a month...
The main power company is talking about putting fibre optics down with their cables, which people are hoping will force Telecom to stop being bastards with their broadband.
Added to that, New Zealand has a slow connection to the rest of the world, so international traffic is pretty slow no matter how good your connection is. I wouldn't count on hosting any NWN2 modules any time soon.
Oh, now you're in NZ, Thangs, you can join the dead NZ NWN forum with me, Searchin and occassionally Rumple and Rotku (and a couple of others)!
