Re: Game of Thrones S3 Ep9 (Spoilers)
Haha, wow, I guess I shouldn't be surprised its online, but its strange seeing those techniques just out there on the web for all to see.
Some of the techniques are a little outdated, I think - given the prevalence of decent body armor (like SAPI and ESAPI plates) strikes to the body are not recommended, plus you never know what miscellaneous gear they might be wearing that will interfere with the strike. So we were taught to always go for the neck, primarily with option D (hand over nose and mouth) though the cutting technique I was referring to is not specifically mentioned in the manual. Well, OK, there were two cutting techniques we were taught, one is a brute-force type method that works best if you have a serrated blade, and the other works better if you have a thin but very sharp stilletto type weapon (i.e. Fairbairne-Sykes type dagger or equivalent).
In my stories I often refer to Aliyah's short sword as a "killing-knife" - that comes from my time in the battalion scout platoon (3 squads of scouts, 3 sniper teams). Almost all of us carried at least three knives - you had your issue bayonet (M9, made by Phrobis when I was in) which we used a pry-tool and digging and cutting wood or whatever, then you had your "knife" which for almost all of us was either a Gerber multi-tool or a Leatherman, and then we carried what we called our "killing-knife" - in my case a Gerber Mk II ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerber_Mark_II). Its not a short-sword, but then, we were not really expecting to end up in crazy melee combat.
Each squad had its machetes, and when we went out with winter gear (we were an arctic unit) we had a hatchet too, though this wasn't Call of Duty or the Special Forces, so no one actually carried the hatchet - it went with the akio group (what we called our sled).
Of all the things I left behind when I left the army, my killing-knife is probably the thing I miss most. Not that I need it, I just loved it. Unfortunately, not long after I made sergeant I was moved out of the scout platoon and to a regular line infantry unit, and my knife got stolen.
A Gerber Mk II cost like $60 or $70 back then and as a sergeant in the army (recently married) I couldn't justify the expense to buy a new one now that I was out of the scouts. I miss that knife though. So sad.
Alright well, that's enough about that. Back to the GoT madness.

Hmm carried my bayonet of course, you could shave with it. 4" double sided boot knife. old timer pocket knife.leatherman.Good Gerber folding knife. 6" colman western skinning knife(giving to me on my 13th birthday). And last but not least, a 5" buck Pathfinder, that my dad carried and used in vietnam. Some of these was on my belt, others on lbe and in the case of the buck...was on my gas mask. Too many you ask? Maybe...but i used every last one of them and to this day still have 2 different types of knives on me at any given time.

People who kill people are not the people who talk about it.

LOL, I never said I killed anyone. I just talked about the knife thing and how what techniques were trained to kill people with.
As for the whole "People who kill people are not the people who talk about it." - that might be true for some, but its not true for others. From Vietnam vets in my family to cousins who went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, to the other vets I see at the VA when I am down there, some talk about it, some don't. It really depends on the person.

Those are some pretty nasty looking tools:

Mik, you don't think the serrated blade of the Gerber would be detrimental to it's primary function?

No, but then, I never had to use the knife to kill anyone. The serrated edge would help with the "brute force" method but would not help with the other method. Anyway, I never had to put any of the methods to use, so who knows. But, the original makers of the knife agree - the first Gerber Mk IIs did not have serrated edges. Mine wasn't one of those, however - I didn't buy one until the 90s.Mik, you don't think the serrated blade of the Gerber would be detrimental to it's primary function?

Voila! I broke free and was able to pull my arm back, still holding my knife.
Only there was blood on the knife. And blood running out of the thigh of the third person who had jumped in to save my best friend from me. He looked at his leg, then at me and I believe the words he said were "Holy shit, I think you stabbed me!"
I was completely speechless, because I could see the hole in his jeans and the blood running out.
He went to the bathroom and emerged awhile later, carried by two hot chicks at the party, his jeans split from cuff to where the "wound" was. Turns out it was a pretty minor injury, but he soaked up the girls' sympathy for the rest of the night. I sat in a corner wondering if there were going to be repercussions (there weren't) and my best friend, who was really, really drunk, ended up getting most of the blame because he was so loudly and belligerently drunk.
He's stayed my best friend for another couple of years until something else entirely put a damper on that friendship. He's still a friend though, and I seem him every now and then. The guy I actually stabbed became a really good friend, and I see him just about every month even though its now around 30 years later.
So, there is the fascinating tale of my one and only real stabbing. I was a kid, not yet in the army by years. And in the end, it amounted to pretty much nothing. Thank the gods!
M.
A pig-sticker of a switch-blade I got from Tijuana. The one and only time I ever stabbed anyone happened when I was a teen-ager. I was at a party, we were all getting drunk, and my best friend was REALLY drunk. We bumped into each other in a hallway, and friendly joshing about turned into pushing, shoving, then wrestling. I pinned my friend to the floor but he wouldn't shut up, calling me names. So, in my brilliance (i.e. drunken stupidity) I pulled out my switch-blade. This did NOT scare my friend, it just made him more pissed off and he talked even more shit (even though I was sitting on his chest). I was thinking about cutting him to teach him a lesson when a third person jumped into the fray and grabbed the wrist of my knife hand. This allowed my friend to get one of his arms loose, and pretty soon there were three hands on the forearm of my knife hand. In my dim drunkeness, I remember being taught in karate class that when you are faced with overwhelming force, don't resist it, go with it. So instead of pulling against the three hands on my arm, I thrust forward. So which knife did you use then?

Pigsticker, excellent! Here I was expecting a reference to the silver blade between your parted lips, humbly by yourself or some other victim from these boards, of which blood thirst I have witnessed first hand on several occasions; not a full action story. Good stuff!

There is probably a lesson in here somewhere about why people should not carry weapons around with them.
