Alfa, and the Unreal 3 Engine.

Post by Charlie »

Have some of you considered moving ALFA to the Unreal 3 Engine? You'd have to convert over to a better product that Bioware now uses, and there would definitely be the server issue. Creating content wouldn't be so hard, as there are more low-poly fantasy-pieces out there than you can count, and/or you would have the ability to take freeware 3D models of whatever, and appropriate them into Unreal.

Unless there was a D&D FR system that could be seamlessly plugged in (and easily) I'd say not...

NWN2's engine is crap; plain and simple. But coding even a small subset of the SRD would be a monumental task. Plus the moment we incorporate any Forgotten Realms or non-open D&D material (like: XP and leveling) we'd get hit with a take down notice faster than you can say "Illithilich". :post:

all of these issues and more should have been immediately apparent in less time than it took to type out the suggestion. Silly charlie is silly.

What about under the d20 open license? The people here are that unskilled in C++? It's not like any of you are making money out of this. I certainly hope not.

Patches welcome.

No, the idle money question was quite real, but if it strikes a cord, so be it.

Making a melee/magic/archery system for d20 in Unreal wouldn't be that hard, but it would be time consuming. The question is answered from the few comments I've received, is that people don't want to bother. It's understandable, as time is valuable.

Charlie, sounds like you may be a programming stud! Any interest in building/ scripting for Alfa? Sadly, I got a C-- in programming so I'm no use, but we can always use talented peeps!

That's not possible. I'm still barely learning C++ (still reading the book, slowly) and don't have time for artwork.

Then you've no real idea of how large of a project this is.

Trust me, as someone who is in the field and uses C++ regularly, it would be something you'd hire a team of full-time programmers for.

Also, we'd get the aformentioned take-down notice the minute any map, location or other stuff from FR setting made into the game. Essentially you are talking about building a parallel NWN game. Tech/programming issues aside, WOTC, Bioware & Co. will be raging mad.

I actually heard that game had a lot of potential?

(probably not for alfa, but just in general?)
