I joined my first MMOG in '93, it was Multiplayer Battltech EGA, a GUI based MMOG made up of a collection of chat rooms linked together with compass buttons used to represent various locations within the capital cities on about 200 planets of the Inner Sphere. Each planet had a launch room from where you could battle against AI controlled enemy units in a tweaked out Mechwarrior EGA 3D combat engine, in the hopes of gaining (but possibly loosing) a percentage of force balance on that planet and thus secure it as a link in your factions supply chain. There is a tremendous amount of detail that I am leaving out for the sake of staying on topic, but let me tell you, this game was literally a work of art, the likes of which has never been seen since, built by the infamous Dr. Kelton Flinn. Its my opinion that this game was so good the government doesnt want you to play it :)

Anyway, I started out life with Grendel as my handle, running crappy FB clean up missions for the 7th Lyran Guards on backwater Steiner worlds, but quickly grew tired of it and as a result of my complaints was offered up as bait by Steiner high command to lure the prestigious Wolf's Dragoons into a contract with the Commonwealth. Well the Dragoons liked what I had to offer and I got the gig, but they turned their backs on the LCW, instead accepting a contract with the Davs.

Focus... to make a long story short, after a while the WDMC became a bit stagnate due to some leadership issues at the top of the chain, so a few of the higher ups helped me fund my own Merc unit, which became wildly successful, employing on average 30 pilots at any given time. I had to spend all my time recruiting, it wasnt much fun for me, but my unit was sweet, fully loaded. The envy of the IS.

Anyway, a buddy of mine had been elected House Leader in Marik a few times and when Kesmai announced they were going to kill EGA and replace it with MPBT Solaris, we began working together to build up Marik (arguably the weakest faction) for the coming of the new age.

When Solaris came out in '96 the internet had changed from a place where a few thousand people sent emails through dos based applications over 12k modems, to the wonderful world of AOL where even your grandma can find a date in a chat room. There were Grendels everywhere! So I decided to change my name to something a bit more unique, so the new recruits wouldnt always have to ask which Grendel told them to stop attacking Liao. Being a mythology nut, I chose Amergin thinking no one under the age of 75 has ever even heard the name. Of course about a year later some dork wrote a crappy book about Amergin the Bard who sits on a dirt floor every night (cause everyone knows all Celts love dirt floors) and for years I had people telling me all about Amergin the Bard as if they had ever read a history book in their lives.

But it wasnt until a few years after UO came out that I saw another player using the name so I guess it served its purpose well enough.

We built up Marik to being by far the strongest faction and smoked everyone on the map for about a year and a half, until they announced that 3025 was canceled. Then I had to retire.

It wasnt my desire to be the best around, as the karate kid montage song suggests, but rather to show the other factions their error in treating their lower ranks as if they were truly of less value than themselves. Those bloated ego maniacs were killing the game for newbies and the devs treated them like they owned the place, so I just had to get some knocks in for the little guy. In a game like that, the higher ups are there to serve the newbies, not the other way around, but so few people could grasp that concept. They all wanted to live out their fantasy of being some kind of kingpin at the expense of everyone else. Just like the real world, I guess.

Oh and I used the name Amergin for my Elf CLAM in the original NWN on AOL. One of the few males brave enough to join the Temple of Lolth! I was constantly being whipped, tortured and generally smacked around by the endless army of Matrons. That was before every 9th person in an MMOG was named Drizzt. Drow were actually cool before Salavatore declared it :) he was just cashing in on their already time tested popularity.

Ok, I'll stop now.

Cheers!

I was 11 or 12 and heading to my first ever LAN,- figured i needed some sort of handle since i was going to enter the chipmod compo. My eyes fell on the back of a cdcover,- i forget which artist, but the title of the track was zicada. I was in a bit of a hurry so i just picked that and it sort of stuck.

Mine is mutated from the name Dobbsy, as Dobbs is my last name. My wife wanted to get me some personalised number plates, and it is far cheaper to get personal plates in NSW that have letters and numbers, so i went with DOB85Y.

Around the same time i started getting to online gaming and communities, so dob85y seemed an easy conversion, and to this day i am yet to be denied its use because someone has beaten me to it.

So if yo see it around the web, good chance it is me.

Dergon Darkhelm is a long running PnP character of mine. I usually DM'd at the tabletop, so he is really my *only* significant PC. Haven't played any of that PnP campaign in 3 years now....it is now limited to my summer vacation with the old friends. :(

But there is ALFA, so it's all good :)

I chose mine because I have no imagination  ...and like Heero and Rotku, I'm awesome

Most of my character names are family name derivations as well, something about generating names from ether just confounds me

Mine is the name of a mountain, which Thomas Dolby wrote a song about back when he was popular, which I then took as a PC name in a PnP game back in '87 or so, Mulu Firewalker (2nd edition AD&D names...). I played that PC for several years and had a lot of fun with it, and used it again as my PC's name on the original Neverwinter Nights on AOL in '92 or '93, but it was just Mulu there. It has since become my defacto gaming name, even though I no longer have a Mulu PC and haven't since probably '03. I've only encountered it already being used on a game board once. I like to use it online because it's a nice short name, yet rare enough to be easily recognized.

If I were going to change my nick, I'd probably go with Grym. But I'll never change my nick.

Brokenbone was the callsign of a trucker I caught a 900 mile ride with around 10 yrs ago.

The other two truckers who I'd done the same route with were named "Dave" which was boring, and "Hog-Itch", which was fairly gross. Hog-Itch got his name from before he was a trucker, he worked in a rendering plant of some sort, and usually was up to his shoulders in pork fat, and it gave him a real mean skin condition, and a terrible itch to go along with it... hence, "Hog-Itch."

Anyhow, yeah, Brokenbone was a nice guy. He worked for my uncle who owned a truck line, if that helps forestall any suspicion that the fare to pay for such a journey would be road-head of some sort. :P

I hate you.
I hate everyone in ALFA.

I hate every single thing about you and ALFA.

Even if I know nothing about you and you're new to ALFA, I hate you!

You people fill me with rage and bile.

Most importantly I hate this thread. This absurdly sycophantic thread of tripe!! I hope you all die excruciatingly painful wasting deaths. Like some type of aids-cancer hemorrhaging diarrhea! Because of this thread I know there is no redeeming quality for any of you. . .

. . .except for Heegz, Danielmn, Burt, and Mord. Great job!
