We have had numerous music threads in our lengthy time, more often than not becoming "what's my play list?" over anything else. Whether or not people actually bother to look over your play list and hear some music outside of shared interests (ie. "Wow, you like <x> too? Awesome! *posts their own play list*") is unknown and, more than likely, not effective. Therefore, I am recreating the trend of posts with a more organized twist -- for those who wish to grant their music knowledge/preferences upon the community, please abide to the following and respond.
- You may list up to three bands (maximum). Although this limits your choices, it also makes you decide on what music you really would like to get out there and share with the community. This will prevent people from listing their top 100 bands (hopefully) from play list y - z.
- You may list up to five songs (maximum) per band. It is preferred if you have a link to the song in order to list it. Please do not list five songs if you have no links to provide their sound. I'm trying for effectiveness in this thread, and if you can't provide the music then there's a good chance the person reading will not go out of their way to listen.
- For each band, give a brief rundown with the information choices that will be given after these points. Their similarities, a small tidbit of what their sound is like, what have you. Don't give Wikipedia entry-sized information, as we're not trying for a tl;dr thread (even if this description will be hypocritical in that response).
- If their music is NSFW (not safe for work), please list it as such.
- For a format that would work well for this thread, please try to copy the following:
Band: The name of the band you're trying to get out there.
Genre: Although music can be limitless, try to be within reason. If it's Pseudo-Mega-Rockabilly-Techno-Enhanced-Remix-Metalcore, no one's going to understand that (god I hope that's a fake example). Let's try to limit the genre to what people will understand.
About Them: Give a brief description of what they're about. You can list their albums, what they normally create about, how they were formed, whatever. A small biography or a description of just how they get the sounds they do, whatever tickles your fancy and is interesting.
Similar To...: This may be difficult, but it gives people an idea of the sound. If you can list a more mainstream option, please do so. Otherwise, try to give a band or song name that will garner some more interest if you're worried.
Song(s): {url=www.website.com}Song Name/Album{/url}, {url=www.website.com}Song Name/Album{/url}, {url=www.website.com}Song Name/Album{/url}
note: Please change {} into [] when editing. It'll allow for the actual links to work and fixes clutter.
The hopes of this thread, once again, is to provide a solid listing of different music/styles to our community that people will actually be able to get involved with, listen to, and perhaps end up enjoying. This isn't a thread where you post every song you ever listened to, but you specify your choices and give people the chance to hear the sounds, instead of expecting them to download a music program to download these songs or buy the albums just out of your word alone. Also, if anyone has their own band they'd like to promote (ie. you're a guitarist/singer/DJ), please stick to the same format and, by all means, post your work if you want to get your sound out there.
Final Note: Although I cannot prevent people from posting their long lists and spamming this thread, it'd be appreciated if you'd actually participate instead. TT et al, I'd like to request that the pictures remain out of this thread (for now) -- although I do enjoy them, I'd like to see if we could actually get an effective music thread going in ALFA. I'm very interested to get some new music, as I'm sure some others may be as well.

Re: The Music Thread
Band: Murder by Death (formerly known as Little Joe Gould)
Genre: Rock
About Them: Their name is from an old comedy from 1976 of the same name. They play a wide range of music styles, but have a hint of country influence in their sound (it has a Cash ring to it at times). Their last three albums, "Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them?" (2003), "In Bocca Al Lupo" (2006), and "Red Of Tooth And Claw" (2008) are all considered concept albums (ie. have a story to them/reoccurring theme), and all differ in sound. They work in both a cello and piano into their songs (they have more piano in their earlier albums, before the pianist quit and the woman on cello had to play both in concerts) and they describe their concept albums on their website, if anyone is curious as to what their themes are.
Similar To...: As of late, Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen have a strong similarity to their sound (especially in vocals). Their earlier work can be considered a more generalized indie sound.
Song(s): Killbot 2000 (from Who Will Survive...), Brother (from In Bocca Al Lupo), Spring Break 1899 (from Red of Tooth and Claw)
Band: Explosions in the Sky
Genre: Instrumental Post-Rock
About Them: They're a Texas-based band that is all instrumental. Their music is, normally, very mellow and hypnotic, songs flowing in and out without the listener knowing they were on a new track. For anyone interested in them, their album "All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone" is truly a wonderful piece -- six songs that flow so well that you really can grow to enjoy them (quickly at that).
Similar To...: Mogwai, The F*cking Champs
Song(s): The Birth And Death of the Day, Welcome, Ghost, It's Natural to be Afraid, What Do You Go Home To?, Catastrophe and the Cure
(That's five of the six tracks from the album I suggested. If you appreciate their sound, which is in order, then by all means look for the finishing touch to the album. It's Natural is the only song that has been cut short, sadly.)
