Considering LucasArts only gave them a third the time KOTOR1 had, that feeling is entirely accurate. ;) That is the game's only real shortcoming, but I was okay with it since the rest was so good. I'm hoping the restoration mod turns out well.

Gosh, I haven't played a lot of games.

1. NWN1 - sure if all you look at is the game SP it's nothing much, but really now....

2. NWN2 - I'm being hopeful.

3. Wing Commander Privateer - A space combat sim with an RPG thrown in. Destroy a ship and tractor beam in it's goodies, and pilot to sell as a slave! And the enemy keep shooting at you and hitting you while you try to jump. I'm sure I couldn't play it again today, but fond, fond memories.

4. DOOM - Though really MoDoom, since it was at it's best multiplayer. Many good times shooting my little brother in the back with a double-barrel shotgun (he never looked behind him). The MoDoom room on AOL was my first experience with online chat. Back then instead of A/S/L? it was AC? (Area Code).

5. Starcraft - My favorite part was the beginning, running a squad of marines through an alien landscape and having them comment on everything they see. Wish the whole game had been like that.

6. Torment
7. BG series
8. Civ II
9. SimCity 2000
10. Diablo
Neverwinter Connections Dungeon Master since 2002! :D

Jagged Alliance 2 - I actually think I like this more than X-Com. Best turn-based, squad level tactical combat evah
X-Com - still break it out once/year or so
Torment
Fallout 1 & 2
Combat Mission: Afrika Corps - what can I say, the East Front just doesn't do it for me. Gimme pussy tanks that don't even carry HE rounds over the Russkie hordes any day
Alpha Centauri - forget the Civ titles, this here is where it's at
Baldur's Gate II w/Throne of Bhaal - It should have been I!
System Shock 2 - I'm soooorrrry.
Il-2: Forgotten Battles - zee king of zee flight sims
Half-Life 2 - duh

My preference for the original is based mostly on the fact KotOR2's end was balls. The original also had one of the best plot twists in gaming history (at least I didn't see it coming).

NickD wrote:4. Medieval: Total War: The original wins out over the more recent titles for me. M2 had too many problems, and still has a lot of poor response issues. And I quite liked the simplicity of the Risk map over the movement point system, where it was too easy to lose track of armies. Obviously M:TW doesn't stack up to M2:TW, but in its time, it was much much better. After years of being sick of RTS games, I didn't have high hopes for Medieval, but with its mix of strategy and RTS it was a breath of fresh air.
You do realize that the original is Shogun: Total War. -5 nerd points for you.

-3 nerd points for everyone else who posted but didn't correct this.

...back in the day when gameplay was king....

1. Civilization - No game has kept me up at night longer than this one. The best game ever made.
2. X-Com: UFO Enemy Unknown - I never get bored of playing this.
3. Team Fortress Classic - Engineer, upgraded sentry gun, emp grenades, nuff said. At my prime I could not be beat online.
4. Duke Nukem - More FPS fun!
5. M.U.L.E. - I had to include this Commodore 64 masterpiece on my list. Quite simply the best multiplayer strategy game ever made.
6. Master of Orion - The sequels were good, but didn't capture the flavour of the original.
7. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - A rare case of a sequel being better than the original. Havent tried HommIV yet.
8. NetHack - The best Hack and Slash dungeon crawl ever. And its free!
9. Master of Magic - A civ-like game in a fantasy setting.
10. Bandit Kings of Ancient China - Fight to unite the country in 12th century China. Highly addictive and great fun.

If you liked that, try its both successors, Genghis Khan 1 & 2. There's also some fantasy setting game, but I forgot its name.

Good call on MoM too... awesome game.

Yes, I know. I have Shogun too. I meant original as in the original Medieval, not the original Total War. :P
Current PCs:
NWN1: Soppi Widenbottle, High Priestess of Yondalla.
NWN2: Gruuhilda, Tree Hugging Half-Orc

Some of my preference might have been timing - in that Barbarossa came out when I was still sharing an apartment with a good friend and fellow wargamer, and Afrika Corps came out when we both were too busy; but I also prefer the terrain and non-MG squad-based firepower in Europe better.

Played Shock Force yet? Impressions?

Save yourself the heartache. That they dumped many of the gameplay changes to go back to III's style for HoMMV should be an indicator. I liked the idea of selectable buildings at a given level, but hated the combats and the way heroes were handled (both in general and in the campaigns). The new HoMMV expansion will bring back some of that I guess in the "alternate upgrades" idea, and I really liked the Fortress/Dwarven group out of the 1st expansion for a unique, somewhat underpowered, style of play.

Civilization

Civilization 4

Civilization 3

Age of Empires

Neverwinter Nights

Baldur's Gate II

Baldur's Gate

Final Fantasy 7

And then hit a complete blank. Can't remember any other games I've played that are worth mentioning :?

[Edit]Oh, a notable mention to SimCity. It was a brilliantly fun game before, but I don't think I could put up with it now. And I guess many other in the Sim series.

My only real issue with BB is that the Russians are rather, ah, clumsy. Command delays of several turns are a bit of a turn off for me. That, and too many of the scenarios are too large for my liking. Stops feeling like a game and starts feeling like work.

I'll need to spend the better part of $1k on a 'puter before I can play it. As I'm graduating in December, that's not exactly in the budget.

The forums make great spectator sport, however.

Games, well that depends on what game.

A strategy game isn't a FPS.

I'll chose FPS or Beat Em Ups

1.Marathon.
2.Half Life2
3.DOOM 3.
5.Oni.
4.DOOM.
6.The Elderscrolls:Morrowind.
7.Fable.
8.Unreal.
9.Half Life.
10.Quake.

Games that didn't make the list and why.
HALO: Combat Evolved and HALO2.
-It boiled down to yet another zombie shooter, and half the game misssing after Bungie was purchased halfway into development.
-Sarge was still alive.
-Everyone speaks English.
-The graphics aren't as good as you might think, but well aranged.

Fear
-The storyline wasn't up to par, even though it was spooky as hell.
-Naked dead women.

Oblivion
-Contrived bullshit, though well intended.
-Halfassed design, and lacking what spice and intrigue Morrowind had.
-In an attempt to dodge an MA rating, they wimpified everything.
-Orcs sound like Nords
-No Gravely Sounding Dunmer
-Homoginized elf voices.
-Homoginized beastfolk.
-Blue Fucking Screen Of Fucking Death
