No. Executive privilege does not exist in the Constitution, thus there are no checks. For many years now the US has largely been run by executive fiat rather than constitutional law. It started long before Bush, though he's taken it to new heights. Check out the end of Nixon's presidency for where it really got rolling, and FDR for the beginning.

I'm sorry, but caffeine, like (but not limited to) alcohol, cigarettes, homosexuality, drugs, gambling and MMORPGs are all addictive substances, and once you become addicted to something it will torment you for all eternity in the afterlife, so it is for the protection of your immortal soul that they will all be made illegal. That's what it says in the book of mormon anyway. Polygamy will be made legal though, so it's not all bad.

Who would want to live in an after life without such things? An afterlife without caffeine and alcohol isn't really one worth considering.

I dont need alcohol. Drank enough of it when I was in my teens and 20s to last me a lifetime. I prefer bottled water now, thank you.

How can you have caffeine and alcohol when you're a spirit? You don't have a physical body to indulge them with!

You're a fool! You're a flippin' fool!
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

Yeah, he did a mediocre job as Mass. governor. I wouldn't hold too much hope out for him

See I still am totally behind Condi Rice. She's a black female republican I think that would make everyone happy, right? ;)

Oh and to jump back a bit in the thread: Judical Review is also not in the constitution, and the courts have been abusing that for over a century. I doubt that you are going to get rid of executive privilege anytime soon.

One last thought, Hillary Clinton ruining is the best chance for the republicans to win the election. Its the Dems election to lose and Hillary could definitely lose it.

Lots of things aren't in the Constitution, like agencies for example. Our government isn't limited to the Constitution, though it is limited by the Constitution.

Executive privilege makes sense up to a certain point. At the point where the advice is criminal in nature, then the privilege shouldn't hold. That's the line Nixon crossed, and SCOTUS let him know it. So, yes, executive privilege does have a limit, but firing attorneys for political purposes doesn't cross that limit, since it's not illegal to do so, just unethical.

The dems should have just impeached the lot of these criminals, for lying to Congress about WMD's and outing Plame. That way, in order to defend themselves against impeachment they'd have to talk. Too late in the game now.

On the next President, Republicans seem to be forgetting that the Iraq war is incredibly unpopular, and all the GOP candidates with a shot are essentially pushing for more of the same. None of them are talking about withdrawal, on any terms, that I'm aware of. That's going the be the kiss of death in the national election. The surge will be ancient history, the minor gains made during the very hot summer (the number always look better in July and August due to the heat) will be long since lost come November, and all the Democratic candidate has to say is, "Do you really want four more years of Iraq?" and not otherwise screw up too badly, and that's the White House. Remember, Americans don't actually care if Iraq falls into genocidal civil war after we leave. As a population we don't care about the Iraqi people, never have never will. "Let them kill each other," is the expression I hear most often. So, although the Democratic candidate cannot actually come out and say, "let them kill each other," he or she could say it in code, e.g. "Iraq is not our permanent responsibility," and the GOP strategy of saying we have to stay to prevent an all out civil war is a non-starter, and will almost certainly cost the GOP candidate the Presidency. One more year of war will only damage the GOP hopefuls more, and boost the Dems.

But I do agree that Rove is probably going to work for the GOP candidate after the primaries are over. It ain't gonna be Mitt Romney, the man looks like he's wound so tight a spring could pop out of his ear at any moment, and putting all of his sons on his campaign front and center just means that only one of them has to screw up or turn out to be a closet homosexual crack addict to blow the whole campaign. Serious contenders include Rudy Guliani and Fred Thompson.

I personally think Obama is going to be the next President, but we've got a long ways to go.
