Angus yawned, not for the first time, as he turned the corner from Shield Street onto Traders Way. The sun was just beginning to rise above the city walls and city was coming back to life. This had been the third night in a row that he had been asked to pull a double shift, overnight. And for the third straight night, the streets of Waterdeep had been blissfully quiet.
Angus actually preferred patrolling at night. There were less people on the streets at night, so if a confrontation did occur, there would be fewer civilians around to get in the way. More importantly, less people meant less chaos. A quiet patrol was good. A quiet patrol meant no Dweomervores were pilfering the pockets of the unobservant. A quiet patrol meant no thugs attack sailors as they drunkenly staggered back to their ships. A quiet patrol didn’t help you stay awake, but a quiet patrol was good.
He smiled and nodded as he walked passed the first set of vendors in the market. The smell of sweetbreads was thick in the air. Yawning again, Angus indulged in a long, slow stretched...arching his back and fully extending his arms over his head. That’s when he felt it. The tug, tug, tug of something, unseen, pulling at his pack. A rush of adrenaline washed away his fatigue. Angus dipped his fingers into a jar of ointment then spread it onto his eyelids. Speaking softly while circling his, he cast True Seeing. Instantly his senses heightened and the square brightened. Angus quickly downed a potion of Amplification and began scanning all of the nearby alcoves. Lurking in the shadows, not more than twenty paces away, hovered a Dweomervore.
Angus summoned a Dire Wolf to aid him, then extracted a pouch of glow powder. Moving swiftly, he charged the Dweomervore and showered it with the powder. The Dire Wolf lunged at the beast, tearing open its belly. The Dweomervore unleashed a color spray, missing Angus but striking a nearby merchant. A riot ensued, with several merchant turning on the Dire Wolf leaving Angus to deal with the Dweomervore. Feeling the sting of an acid flask in its flanks the wolf turned and struck the nearest merchant. With two true bites, a merchant crashed to the ground in a pool of her own blood. Angus disengaged from his fight and dismissed the wolf, but it was too late to late for Kasha. Angus turned back to the Dweomervore clapped his mace upon his shield. I stroke of white light burst forth from the skies and slammed the Dweomervore to the ground. Stunned, the beast froze in mid-air for but a second, but that was enough. Angus swung his mace directly into the spiked skull and the Dweomervore breathed its last breath.
Angus rushed to Kasha’s side. He immediately cast a curative spell before examining her. The wounds had healed but she was very weak. Angus gently lifted her body and carried her to the Third Circle. He bade Ser Belisarius to watch over her until she was well enough to return to her stand.
