Pickpocketing Waterdhavians?

Post by Akivaria »

Ayergo,

What are the chances we rogues/bards could get a little gold or miscellaneous items added to the Waterdhavians so we can pickpocket stuff? Even if it's just a handful of gold (5-10GP), something like a cheapo grenade or holy water, or a potion, it would make a world of difference as rogue skills just aren't viable right now.

And all the stuff we'd use to become more viable can only be obtained via combat for gold or items to pawn off, or pickpocketing my PC friends, which isn't an option for Alora. :( It's already balanced out by the risk of an ass-kicking if the attempt is detected, or jail if DM sees it.

Mages have fires. Melee types have rats. I feel like this wouldn't take a ton of work and it would be a huge boost to quality of life for rogues/bards. Please?

Not that Twilight would know, but some walking around the city do have things that can be lifted.

Good luck!

Oh, and trap disarming (and maybe some locks?) comes with xp rewards. I mean...so I've heard.

Yeah, I've tried. (A lot.)

This morning I walked around half the city and lifted a grand total of 2 gp (with zero XP reward) from probably 20-25 attempts.

I feel like the rewards are exceedingly low for rogue skills, given the risk.

It NEVER was very lucrative to pickpocket NPCs - was always considered too easy a way to make coin by the powers that Were. As I recall it was not allowed to have much of anything on a NPC that could be taken by a Pickpocket.

Those PCs that got rich by Pickpocketing [Mashan comes to mind] targeted Other PCs. In our very minimal community currently that may quickly alienate or get CvCd someone caught pickpocketing another PC

I know ayergo has implemented some XP for lockpicking and trap disarming in dungeons, would be nice if the various houses that one use to be able to rob were still around but I know the mod can only hold so much.

You will definitely have better luck with a DM about. I think that is mostly because of the complications of being caught, rather than concern over getting rich.

Everything is better with a DM about!

Croaker never pickpocketed though. Before he moved beyond such things, he made his coin breaking into the houses of the deep. Lots and lots of houses, always looking over his shoulder for the guard and never knowing if the resident would be around to protest. There was never alot to be found, but I'd guess that about a third of the time there was something, either 20-30 gold or maybe a CLW or something.

But then, iirc, that stopped (like 2005 maybe?) because that was deemed too easy a way for sneaky types to make a living.

I hear you, Aki. Murgen has the ability to take out a few rats - watching out for consecutive crits by Ash rats, damnit - not a great source of funds, but at least its something.

Pickpocketing thieving is really hard to implement in a static way. As it is a really high risk endeavor its difficult for scripts to respond appropriately (getting caught, guards looking for you, etc). As such it is mostly with DM only currently.

That said, most of the good loot in dungeons requires a rogue along to get it and there is XP for some traps. I'm hoping to work on a random trap script here at some point that should make dungeons more interesting for rogues, but haven't gotten to yet.

Sidebar: I never met (or even knew) Mashan.

But one of the funnest things to ever happen to my NWN1 PC Malcer Angalstrand was finding a couple dozen special keys on the body of the PC Ash, which he came across on BG. The keys were to various doors and p-chests all over Faerun, spanning all of the servers.

I became embroiled in a classic ALFA bureaucratic clusterf*ck as some DM told admin that my PC should be barred from actually keeping the keys. The reasoning was that one of them might be the key to the imfamous "Mashan Horde".

Eventually it was ruled that I could keep them. I was at one point able to enter the thieves guildhall in Waterdeep (the entrance to which I had followed a member PC through the WD sewers years prior with intent to CvC in retribution for damage done to the Sharran PC sect but couldn't enter due to "a specific key needed").

I returned ... now with the proper key ... and took out every NPC in the place, RPing defiling the guild-house in the most heinous way.

It was awesome fun! :)

Well, mission accomplished.

I think it's a little unreasonable to have to PP 1250 NPC's to make 100 gold, though.

Would there be some way to make it high risk high reward for real? Like all the guard goes hostile if someone yells out? And making sure there was a bell curve on NPC spot checks where there were some that totally could catch even the best?

This sounds hard to script.

Also, please don’t die Alora.

Currently explaining the meaninglessness of it all as Vizian Nazyr.

I'm actually kind of curious how hard it would be to PP goblins. We might have to test this...

DC for hostile creatures is 30. Not easy at all.

Also, some NPCs do turn hostile if you are spotted. I mean, so I hear.

Yeah, that isn't really the issue. The problem is I have to figure out how to make guards/world respond.

That being said I do like "systems" in general and will see if I can come up with something interesting. Can't promise that it won't kill you though, this is pretty high risk stuff.

I have done some research and have some ideas. Sadly I am considered "essential" so I'm not getting any unexpected time off, but will see what I can cook up for you since there is high demand. I think I'm going to try and control it via conversation so that if you're busted you have a chance to talk your way out of it.
