Tragnar Ironsworn

Tragnar Ironsworn is youngish dwarf, born in 1306 DR in the Thunder Blessing. He is a stout and strong shield dwarf with thick, long red hair and a matching thick, long red beard. Tragnar wears heavy armor and shield as well as plated boots and gauntlets. Around his neck on a leather cord is a pendant showing a green gem set into the side of mountain. (Simple knowledge check to note this as the symbol of Dumathoin.)


Unlike many of his kin, Tragnar is talkative, pleasantly profane, and even downright friendly. He smiles often, showing crooked teeth. However, his bluntness may be off-putting at times and he lacks many social graces.



In the amount of time it takes to share conversation of a few ales one could easily learn the following about Tragnar Ironsworn:

* Tragnar hails from the dwarven stronghold of Ironmaster, near Spine of the World and Ten Towns in the far north of Faerun, where Clan Ironsworn is one of the major dwarven lineages, going back many generations.

* Tragnar is an acolyte of Dumathoin, who he calls the "Secret Keeper".

* Tragnar has been sent out by the Talhund of Ironmaster (The High Priest of Dumathoin) to learn what secrets he can before he returns to Ironmaster and takes the "Silent Vow", becoming a full priest. (It would also be quickly revealed the Tragnar holds significant reservations about taking a vow of silence, enjoy the gift of gab more than most dwarves.

12 Alturiak, 1352 DR

The long night of Winter gripped the North and bitter colds winds whipped off of the Sea of Moving Ice to buffet the low walls of the dwarven city of Ironmaster. Patrols of the stout clansmen of the isolated mining settlement setting out along the Shaengarne River would not get far before their beards were frozen solid. The caravan trail towards Ten Towns and Maer Dualdon would remain impassible for yet another five rides.

Life at the edge of civilization was hard, but the dwarves of Ironmaster had met the challenges of their harsh surface environment and had thrived here for many generations.

The few unfortunate non-dwarves who were unable to finish their trading and beat the first blizzards that shut off the passes wintered over in the squat stone buildings built into the rocky walls on the edges of the Ironmaster Vale.

The surface here was as harsh and foreboding a place as one could imagine…

Yet there was another world below ground at Ironmaster where the cold winds and biting sea spray gave way to the cool, damp, and (to a dwarf) welcoming walls of rock and ore and crystal that cut deep into the earth and wound for miles upon miles into the dark unknown.

This was where Tragnar, son of Kelnar, son of Kraktar, of Clan Ironsworn made his life. Clan Ironsworn had for generations proudly mined the rich deposits and worked the forges of Ironmaster. At age 46, Tragnar was but a short-beard, yet he had already been working for over a decade stocking the coal for the iron forges and, like all dwarves in the city, had received battle training to be ready for inevitable orc and ice troll raids and for whatever abominations might wander into the dwarves’ deep tunnels. Tragnar was destined for a life in the forges and mines… An honorable life among his kin…. A life much like those of his father and his father’s father before him. … A dwarf’s life.

But on this 12th day of Alturiak in the year 1354 of the Dale Reckoning, Tragnar would go out on his first patrol into the tunnels beneath Ironmaster. The events that would take place on that day would change the course of his life path forever.
