So I like exploring, how are the roads connecting cities?

Are the main roads low level friendly? I'd like to start playing again but don't want to get stuck in a ghost town. Is travelling solo generally safe or lethal as a whole?

Well, TSM likes the occasional surprise buttseks, but other than that you will be just great

BG - Main road wholly safe from Baldur's Gate to Nashkel
TSM- Uses an overland map with random encounters (that can indeed be deadly)
MS- Safe overland (and over sea) travel except for few places that are marked as potentially dangerous.
WHL- Uses an overland map with random encounters (that can also be dangerous)

TSM's overland encounters, despite occasionally containing dangerous enemies, are pretty toothless since they can almost always be avoided.

Good to know. I still remember the time I wanted to add some wild life scenery along the roads in TSM and forgot to set a flag. People were chased by hundreds of deer and dumb bunnies!
