A nice read indeed.
While I'm getting used to NWN2, I still miss the old NWN1 servers.

That I dream of an update goes without saying, but it seems like WotC is looking in other venues for cashflow so I'm not holding my breath.

NWN1 still plays better than NWN2 even with all the great additions of the tech team. Looking back, I feel we were premature in closing our NWN1 servers. I would still play on them to this day if they were running.

I have to agree with swift. Seem when going through the transitions to NWN2 is when we lost majority of the people.

Do not get me wrong the NWN2 servers are great. The tech team does an awesome job. And the gra[hics are a little better. But NWN1 has a history with ALFA.

I may just be old and sentimental.. or is it semi mental.. I miss TLR..

Why not dust off and kick all the old servers back up and let people play on them? I think you may draw back more alfians that way.

P.S. That was a good read.

Last time I enquired on that topic, the only thing standing in the way of bringing back an ALFA1 server was essentially finding a host and managing distribution of the haks. There are up to date haks for the last batch of ALFA servers and a few of them still work (BG, DF, NC and TSM work for sure. Think there are one or two others that may still work, the rest would need updating to the new haks as they don't currently load). We're it to happen, the server would likely end up being whichever one was most popular with anyone that wanted to DM on it. My vote, as always, remains with Northern Cormyr as the rebuilt version was vast and beautiful ;)

Tech assistance would be minimal to none as their focus remains on NWN2 and quite rightly so as it would remain our lead platform.

Good luck with that. I didn't like 3.0, so you won't be seeing me there.

I could possibly host a NWN1 server.

o_O thanks for that contribution that did nothing but increase your post count. It is not like it would be compulsory to play there ;)

/me points out Swifts reply accomplishes the same thing :D

/me points out Riot's reply to Swifts reply to Adanu's reply accomplishes the same thing...

Turtles all the way down!

Reverting back to NWN1 would be a collossal headache... am thinking of all the haks etc. The infrastructure for NWN2 (module management, ADL, databases) seems generally better.

Having said that ... I miss the server scope and density of NWN1. Of course, I was unemployed then...

I miss chugging out an area or two per hour in the toolset rather than 1 every 3.

I was saying good luck, but if you'd prefer I threw rotten eggs and tomatoes at you...

I can do that too.

Good job nobody is talking about reverting then, hmm? :D

From a player perspective, the most inconvenient thing would be getting the haks which is only mildly inconvenient. It wasn't that long ago that we didn't have the ADL for NWN2 and still had to manually download .pwcs for our servers.

Thinking more on it, the biggest hurdle would be the amount of up front tech assistance required to properly set up the host machine and sorting out a server vault again.

Waterdeep and Sembia were on the latest when they were taken down, if memory serves, and Waterdeep finally got its much much needed conversion to standards.

Actually... the fun thing about that is that our structures for NWN1 were pretty simple. We never adopted NWNx2, so you just need a vault and a host. And nwn1's server was happy to run on Linux-- so there wouldn't be any of NWN2's virtual machine shimmy necessary. Move files onto server; mount drives; start server; play.
