LA Election June 2012: Confidence Vote

Post by Veilan »

O hi.

This thread shall serve for self-nominations for the position of Lead Administrator for the period June 2012 - December 2012.

Every ALFAn in good standing can stand for election, and the voting constituency encompasses all members.

I am passing election oversight and its conduct to PA danielmn, whom you can contact for any problems that you may encounter or questions that you may have.

Please only post if you're self-nominating. The self nomination period shall last for seven days.

Cheers and a happy election,

Right, having donned my continental suit, I'm willing to give riding The Brute another try.

Who am I?

I'm a member since 2003, mostly been playing, but also DMed on NWN 1 Neverwinter, built a little for various servers, filled a couple of staff positions (most notably Standards, DM Liaison and Moderation), and I've been serving as LA for a little over two full terms now. Some general achievements that I am happy to mention are opening our Standards to the public, abolishing anonymous moderation working for IA zicada, and pooling ressources with IA Hialmar to supply server machines for ALFA.

What have I done?

Good question. While I know it is an incremental compromise, I'm still happy that we finally got a temporary retirement tryout scheme, which took no small effort to get past the various reasonable concerns of the other Admin. The Lead Admin, a somewhat misleading name, has no direct power to "lead" after all - all I can do is talk nicely, or threaten nuclear weapons.

Less tangible, but I believe even more important, is a continued improvement in our climate - at least on the "grand project" scale. I think we all know we are expanding and successful, and the naysayers predicting ALFA's demise have been proven wrong. Certainly, there are some frictions arising of late, but these seem to be growing pains rather than a harbinger of decline.

I would like to think that I also helped, slowly, bring about a climate change about the Admin team. We are all volunteers, but there seems to be a better spirit of professionalism these days - and less political jockeying. Many other admins have picked up different aspects of my drive for data-based analysis and embraced the idea of working not only from the gut but the cold head also, and while disagreements always exist, they seem to happen in a rational fashion where we try to solve problems facing ALFA together; there is a slew of cross-portfolio input asking and opinion sharing. Polls on issues have become a standard tool, not to override our deliberative decisionmaking process, but to provide actual orientation and genuine input.

I believe I have established effective and reliable communications with the other Administrators, and at the end of the day, this is what the position runs on. I can only apply my soft power if I have, if not the love, then at least the grudging respect of my fellows, and I am happy to know that most people believe I will give them a fair hearing and treatment, be they players, DMs, Admins. I am, and have been, open to communication from anyone - via board PMs, chat, or even skype, and am very willing to keep a finger on ALFA's pulse.

On the front of public relations, I have been getting a little better and been more involved with our community postings, trying to communicate ALFA's unique strengths and selling points. However, most effective has been our mouth-to-mouth propaganda for recruiting, and I tried to encourage this wherever possible.

What do I want to do?

As usual, right off the bat, I want to start with another mood gauge - these tools have been invaluable to me to assess not only whether we are doing good, but what problems our project face, and thus where I would best channel my guidance and attention.

Secondly, I would want to try to tackle the election reform as discussed here. It would be a taxing project, as the process for changing the charter is challenging, but I did not want to tackle it before without a relatively fresh mandate - to forestall accusations that this is a matter of "power grab" rather than trying to steady and further professionalise our governance.

As the biggest challenge, and one that will probably always occupy some of my thoughts, I see our expansion, and the slight discomfort and friction that arises here and there from it. I believe the only way to be fair to new and old members alike is to put the emphasis on our project being governed by rules protecting its core spirit, and not clique or personal relations - something where we may have become a little too cozy in some instances. Rules and principles ought to be our guiding light that offers a clear idea of what to expect and how to behave here, and they are more impartial than people - and relying on people and opinions means the deck is stacked against those who are newer enrichments to our community, people who have not yet made all the contacts and learnt all the ropes that the old hares have. I think I am well situated to help guide our expansion, because despite being an old member, I do not really feel very beholden to any one interest group in ALFA, and have proven that I am willing to give a fair and honest hearing to anyone.

Staff

In my opinion, any effectiv Administration needs a reliable and creative staff.

The not-always-ladylike yet lovely lady Cloud_Dancing would continue to help our PR efforts, giving us a not always convenient, but passionate and critical thinker.

Having an expert knowledge of how to fall through ALFA's gaps, yet an unwavering spirit and good humour, Heero is the perfect match to re-energise the LA portion of retentions, an office Rotku created to great effect, and which will surely become invaluable as ALFA grows and attracts new people, who may not always be a friend's friend, and thus have no pilot and anchor.

Furthermore, continuing our spirit of data-driven benchmarking and statistics, FoamBats4All would become my tech liaison, brushing up neat statistics to keep us all in the loop, as well as speaking the language of tech for projects that have been decided upon, but neglected - such as our toughness rewrite. His expertise and friendship with many of the tech staffers will provide improved and smoother communications.

Why me?

Still in full command of my mental powers of alliteration, I believe I am responsive, responsible, reasonable and reliable. I have been dedicated to this project for a long time now, and never turned my back on it. I have a heartfelt stake in our continued success, and strongly believe in our unique core values and vision. I do not shy away from pragmatic, efficient and workable solutions, but I am also principled enough to stand up to my fellow Admins where necessary. Furthermore, while I know I am headstrong, I nevertheless have a high willingness to listen to input and criticism. I am familiar with the office, what it can and cannot do, and enjoy the challenge of doing my piece to better the community in the capacity I can.

At the end of the day, I think I am a sane and reasonable choice for the person with whom the buck stops.

Cheers,

Zhe German has killed off all political adversaries, and will be running for Lead Administrator alone. To Vote for or against Velian continuing to hold the LA position within his firm Tyrannical Grip, go here:
